SHELBYVILLE, IN—MAY 29, 2025–Forty-six three-year-olds are entered in the QHRAI Derby Trials on Saturday, May 31 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Over five trials, they will compete for the ten fastest qualifying times, to return in the finals on June 19th for a purse of $132,080.
The first heat of the day will showcase morning line favorite Terra Fina, a three-year-old filly representing M and G Farms, Inc. She is sired by One Famous Eagle and out of Terra Fire, who was sired by Walk Thru Fire.
Terra Fina has competed in ten races, achieving three victories. She is trained by Anthony F. Cunningham and will be ridden by Luz D. Martinez, starting from post seven.
Second morning line pick in the first heat is Rr Crown This Jess, who is returning to the race after a break since winning the Governor's Juvenile Stakes on October 26, 2024. The son of Coronado Cartel has six lifetime starts, achieving one win, one second, and two third-place finishes for owners Campos Family Ventures, LLC.
Rr Crown This Jess is conditioned by Claudio Barraza, and Edgar Diaz will be riding from post two. He is out ofthe Apollitical Jess mare A Political Lady.
The second heat will feature the 4-5 favorite, Arbitro, a colt with impressive statistics from five starts, boasting four victories and one second-place finish. The son of Ivory James has earned $140,140 for his owners, Campos Family Ventures, LLC.
Arbitro is out of Jess Dee Dee, by Mr. Jess Perry. The bay colt is trained by Claudio Barraza, and Edgar Diaz will be riding him from post six.
The second pick in this heat is Can D Girl, a filly sired by Uncle D. She is out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare This Candy Says Bye. She comes into the trial following a start this year in the Sandy Ridge Cherokee Stakes, where she was moved up to victory, earning her third win from eight starts.
Can D Girl is owned by Ventura Racing, Inc. and is conditioned by Jessica A. Vazquez. The filly races from post two with Giovani Vazquez-Gomes in the saddle.
The third trial heat will feature the 8-5 morning line favorite, Tempt Me Sass. The gelding is arriving after beginning his 2025 racing qualifications for the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby, where he finished seventh. Tempt Me Sass has earned $60,968 across eight starts, achieving two victories and five second-place finishes.
Tempt Me Sass is sired by Tempting Dash and his dam is Jess Sass Me, by Mr. Jess Perry. The horse is owned by LC Racing, LLC, trained by Gustavo Almanza, Jr., and will be ridden by Erik N. Esqueda from post nine.
Second pick in this heat is Jolie Laide, a filly out of Two Wines, by Jesse James Jr for owner Doug Ruby. The daughter of Big Lew has earned three victories from eight starts, earning $51,083. She is also coming into the race after winning her Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Oaks trial, but ran into trouble in the finals.
Jolie Laide is conditioned by Tim Eggleston and ridden by Luis E. Luna Diaz from post three.
The fourth heat features Cowboy On the Fly as the 9-5 favorite. The gelding is the highest money earner coming into the trials, earning $168,868 from eight starts and two victories; he won the 2024 Governor's Stakes.
Cowboy On the Fly is sired by Flying Cowboy 123 out of the mare Dont Bug the Tres, by Tres Seis. He is owned and conditioned by Anthony F. Cunningham and will be ridden by Luz D. Martinez from post five.
Second pick in this heat is Runninagainstwind, a gelding launching his 2025 campaign as a non-two-year-old winner, having earned $36,465 from five lifetime starts for owner Carlos Ramos. In his 2024 career, the son of leading sophomore sire Uncle D distinguished himself by qualifying for the Grade 3 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity, where he secured a third-place finish.
Runninagainstwind is out of Theslatesclean, who is sired by Corona Cocktail. He is trained by Ricardo Martinez and will be ridden by Martin Munoz from post four.
The fifth and final trial features the 8-5 morning line favorite, Beachin Famous. This gelding has had seven career starts and finished in the money every time, earning a total of $84,652 to date.
Sired by Escondido Beach and out of the One Famous Eagle mare Famous Dash to Me, Beachin Famous is owned by Steve Mullins, trained by Tim Eggleston, and will be ridden by Rolando D. Pina from post position two.
The second choice in the final heat is Namor, a colt with limited racing experience who is making just his fourth appearance. His career has started off strong, having won his maiden race in his debut, followed by victory in his trial and qualifying for the 2024 Heartland Futurity, collectively earning $25,476 for owner Jose Plascencia.
Namor is sired by Special Effort and out of Tres My Heart, by Heart Of The Cartel. He is trained by Raul De La Mora and will be ridden by Hugo Macias from post six.
The top ten qualifying times for the 400-yard distance will earn a chance to compete for the $132,080 purse at the QHRAI Derby Finals on June 19th.
