DALLAS, TX—SEPTEMBER 27, 2014— Veteran rider Roman Chapa is reportedly resting comfortably after sustaining broken ribs in a spill at Lone Star Park on Friday night September 27, 2014.

Predominantly a thoroughbred rider, Chapa was at Lone Star Park and was listed to ride the Brandon Muniz trained Thrill Me Baby in the Dash For Cash Derby trials. In the 3rd race, a Starter Allowance going 220 yards, Chapa and his mount Men Dee Go were 70 yards or so from the wire when the horse broke down, sending Chapa into the racecourse in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Antonio Delgado, Sr. trainee was later euthanized due to injuries sustained on the racetrack, and Chapa was transported to Methodist Hopsital in Arlington for examination of his injuries.

"I have several broken ribs," said Chapa. "I also have a clavicle separation from the shoulder, and a few hairline fractures to the clavicle. I sustained an injury to the clavicle five or more years ago, and the doctors said according the to x-rays that it never properly healed from that injury. The doctors are saying that I can expect to be out a few months from the injuries, but I have a tendency to comeback from injuries much faster. I hope to be back trying to get in riding shape in a couple of weeks. It all depends on how I feel, as well as how fast the ribs and clavicle heal."

Earlier this racing season, Chapa had qualified Super Sporting Dash into the G1 Ruidoso Derby for trainer Joel Valeriano. His career highlight thus far came aboard the Steve Wren trained Mr Jester in the $1,000,000 Delta Jackpot Stakes at Delta Downs in Vinton, Louisiana in 2003.
