Perrys Secret Slight Surprise at 13-1 In West Texas Futurity

SUNLAND PARK, NM—MAY 5, 2019—Racing at odds of 13-1, Perrys Secret held off Return Of Brown Eyes to win the 61st edition of the Grade 2 $324,120 West Texas Futurity by a neck at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Ridden by leading rider Manuel Gutierrez, Perrys Secret completed the 300 yards in a blistering :14.921 clocking, earning a 103 speed index with a 9 mph tailwind.

Trainer Jose Ponce saddled the son of champion Hez Our Secret to his second consecutive win in as many starts for owner Almada Racing. The $6,700 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate was bred in Texas by Jackie Sessions from the Mr Jess Perry mare Sister Jess. He earned $152,078 for the today's win to bring his bankroll to $157,418 from two starts.

The gray colt entered the final off the 8th fastest qualifying time in the April 12th trials when he broke his maiden at first asking. He returned a whopping $28 to win, $8.40 to place and $5.20 to show.

Runner-up Return Of Brown Eyes, a $35,500 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate, was trying to emulate his sister Suze Returns' win in the West Texas Futurity(G2) last year.

Jose Luis Muela saddled the High Rate Of Return gelding for partners Diamond Racing Stables and US Alliance Logistic. Flag Ranch LLC bred the 2-year-old in Oklahoma from the Mr Eye Opener mare Brown Eye Suze. He earned $58,243 for the effort.

Kj Mucho Macho Man, a colt by Apollitical Jess from the Rainbow Futurity(G1) winning Tres Seis mare Wild Six, finished 1-¼ lengths back in third.

Wesley Giles conditions the sorrel colt for the partnership of John Lee, Kathy Lee and Ruben Mares. Lee & Sherwood Racing LLC and Mineer is the breeder. Kj Mucho Macho Man picked up $35,593 for his third-place finish.

Tempt The Lady, Apollitical J Wild, Wagon Tales Promises, Mister Mucho Gusto, Tapestri, One Corona Eagle and La Dies Coronas completed the field.

Sunday's all-Quarter Horse card wrapped up the 60th anniversary season at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
