Lone Star Park’s Longest Running Quarter Horse Stakes, The Grade 1 Refrigerator Is Saturday

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER 10, 2019— Lone Star Park held its inaugural Quarter Horse Season in 1997 and has held it every fall except in 2004. That’s the year the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships were held here. The fall Quarter Horse meet was transferred to Sam Houston Race Park, all but one race, the Grade 1 Refrigerator Stakes. The Refrigerator was held on the eve of Breeders’ Cup Day, sort of a novelty one would imagine.

The 23rd running of the Grade 1, $75,000 Refrigerator Stakes for older horses is the scheduled 11th race on Saturday’s 12-race card with post time at 10:45 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. First race post time is 6:05 p.m.

With last year’s winner, Sf Hot Pass opting to skip the race this year to try his luck in the Bank of America Challenge Championships at Albuquerque, there are still a couple of horses to get excited about.

Multiple Grade 1 winner Political Attraction, if back in top form will be nearly impossible to beat. He won three Grade 1’s earlier this year, but since was an unimpressive sixth place finish in his most recent last month at Albuquerque. The comment was one word, flat. This will be his second start since his last win at Remington Park in June.

R. L. Rick Robinson trains the 4-yr-old gelding for owners Rogelio Marquez Jr. and Kathy Robinson. He is by Apollitical Jess out of Gunsight Peak by Separatist. He’s won three of four starts this year earning $257,376 putting his career bankroll at $608,482. Regular rider James Flores will ride.

Patrick Richardson’s graded stakes winner Stone Cold Leader‘s only loss this year from four starts was a second place finish by a neck to Hawkeye in the Grade 2, Sam Houston Classic in May. The 4-yr-old gelded son of Brookstone Bay out of Sheza Classy Leader by Leader of the Class, won his last start, the Grade 3, Miss Poly Classic at Delta Downs. Stone Cold Leader is trained by Alfredo Gomez and his regular rider Rolando Del Rio Pina retains the mount.

Here is the field from the rail out with jockey name and morning line odds:

  1. Rarin (Martin Felix) 5-1
  2. Hes Limitless (Gilbert Ortiz) 15-1
  3. Tough To Bee (Ricky Ramirez) 9-2
