Longtime Trainer Dwayne Sleepy Gilbreath to Join Rockin' S

BROCK, TX—AUGUST 28, 2015—Leading trainer Dwayne Gilbreath has taken a position with Bobby and Catherine Simmons at their new training center in Strawn, Texas. The longtime trainer is currently the #2 active leading trainer of all-time with while saddling the winner's of nearly $28 million.

Gilbreath has won the All American Futurity(G1) three times—starting with On A High in 1983, Refrigerator in 2011 and Ochoa in 2011. He and his wife Joanie have been cutting back on the operation quietly over the past few years.

When Simmons approached the Gilbreaths about moving their operation to his new Rockin' S Training Center in Strawn, Texas the couple made the decision to close their training operation in Brock at the end of 2015.

Gilbreath will become the "hands on training advisor at Rockin' S, which employs his long-time assistant James Lackey as trainer. Lackey was formerly one of the industry's leading riders with mounts aboard such horses as world champions Cash Rate and First Down Dash. After working as a trainer for several years, Lackey joined the Gilbreath team in 2013 as their head assistant.

Gilbreath and Lackey have conditioned Simmons AQHA Racing Champion filly Foxy Moonflash, 2015 Heritage Place Futurity(G1) finalist Corona Surfer as well as qualifying Sky Bo Dash to the $3 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs last week.

Gilbreath told TRACK Magazine's Ben Hudson in an interview last week, “Joanie and I have been thinking about doing something different for a while. These are first class people (Bobby and Catherine Simmons) and they have built a first class place. This gives Joanie and I a chance to slow down a little and spend some time with the grandkids and to do a few things we never got to do."

“James is very capable and he had a whole lot to do with the success that we have had the last few years. This is a great opportunity for Joanie and I to slow down a little but still be involved. And it is a great opportunity for James,” he added.

Rockin’ S is located on Simmons' ranch, an hour west of the Gilbreaths’ facility at Brock. The location is convenient to Lone Star Park, Sam Houston, Remington Park, Retama Park, Zia Park and Ruidoso Downs.

Lackey will live on the Strawn property and plans to have stables at Remington, Ruidoso, Zia, Lone Star and possibly Sunland in 2016.

Simmons told TRACK magazine, “Catherine and I have really enjoyed our relationship with Sleepy, Joanie and James and their entire crew the last couple of years. We look forward to a long-term relationship with them in this new venture.”
