RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 30, 2025–Fifty horses are set to compete in six trial heats for the Ruidoso Maiden Stakes Trials this Sunday, June 1. Entrants will aim to record the ten fastest times over 350 yards to earn a spot in the Ruidoso Maiden Stakes final, scheduled for June 14 with an estimated purse of $100,000.
In the first trial heat, First Cartel Powwer is the 2-1 favorite. This gelding, sired by Favorite Cartel out of the mare Girl Powwer, by Mr Jess Perry, is owned by Rancho El 48, LLC. He enters the trials after two wins this year, including breaking his maiden and winning an allowance race under non-2 conditions, totaling earnings of $36,808.
Trained by James J. Gonzales III, who has four horses competing in these trials, First Cartel Powwer will race from post two with Christian Cardenas in the saddle.
The second pick in this heat is Thrillah, a gelding with two wins in his 2025 campaign out of eight lifetime starts, earning owner Curtis Crenwelge $35,117. Out of the mare Braggin Bout My Zoom, the son of Kiss My Hocks is trained by Wesley T. Giles and will be ridden by Noe Garcia, Jr. from post eight.
In the second heat, the morning favorite is Real Runaway Rime, also at 2-1. This gelding recently secured his first win on May 9, 2025, finishing with a strong 1/2 length victory.
Real Runaway Rime races for owners Israel Bordier and Enrique Bordier and is sired by Rime Chimes out of the mare Runaway Leonarda. Trained by Ismael Villalobos, he will start from post position four with jockey Jose L. Enriquez.
The second contender in this heat is Dok Holiday, listed at 5-2. This gelding is sired by Docs Best Card out of the mare Kiss Me I Am Cajun, owned by Guadalupe Deras.
Although still a maiden with four starts and earnings of $8,790, Dok Holiday shows promise after finishing second by 3/4-length. He is trained by Marco A. Flores and will compete from post two, ridden by Sergio Becerra, Jr.
The third trial heat features Set the Edge, who comes into the event off a win on April 22, 2025. This gelding has raced in fourteen events, securing one win and six second-place finishes, with total earnings of $44,140.
Set the Edge, sired by Kvn Corona out of the mare Famous Little Reba, owned and trained by Alex J. Torres-Casas, will race from post four with Oscar Andrade, Jr. in the saddle.
The second pick in the third heat is Ketzal, a colt sired by Pyc Paint Your Wagon out of the mare Miss Andalusia. Owned by Nove Racing, Ketzal is a maiden after nine starts, with two second-place finishes and total earnings of $12,488. He is conditioned by James J. Gonzales III and will be ridden by Joseph Belloc, Jr. from post nine.
The fourth trial heat features the morning line favorite at 2-1, Seven Cmon Eleven. This gelding, sired by Kiss My Hocks out of the mare Higher Fling, is owned by Chris Lykins, Conda Maze, and Downtime Enterprises, LLC.
Coming off a win by a length, Ketzal broke his maiden at Remington Park on April 12, 2025. With ten starts, he has earned $29,207. Trained by Clinton Crawford, he will start from post position nine with Jacob Enriquez in the saddle.
The fifth trial heat includes Fdd Jess Speed, a gelding coming off two wins at Remington Park this year. This three-year-old, with six lifetime starts, is solidifying his racing career, currently boasting earnings of $35,290 as he aims for a third victory and a spot in the finals.
Fdd Jess Speed, sired by FDD Dynasty out of the mare Jess Sass Me, is owned by Rancho El 48, LLC, trained by James J. Gonzales III, and will be ridden by Christian Cardenas from post four.
In the sixth and final heat, set at 2-1 odds, Eye Am Tempting is a gelding by Eye Am King out of the mare Tempting Love. He races for owner Francisco Lazcano and is conditioned by Emilio Cadena, Jr.
Having made eight career starts with one victory, Eye Am Tempting has amassed earnings of $23,826. In his last outing, he narrowly missed a duel at the wire but is now foRuidosocused on securing a qualifying time in this trial heat. He will be positioned in post eight with Brian C. Barraza in the saddle.
