2023 TQHA Yearling Sale Closes Saturday With 14% Increase In Median Price

SAN ANTONIO, TX–JULY 29, 2023–The final day of the TQHA Yearling Sale in San Antonio finished Saturday with an increase in the median price compared to last year's record-breaking year.

Saturday was headlined by a son of champion sire Tempting Dash selling for $110,000 to Aurelio Juarez.

The colt out of Sam Houston Distaff Challenge winner Im A Feature Girl was consigned by Haddad Ranch as Hip 287.  Aliccante is a half-brother to Firecracker Derby(G3) winner Santander and stakes-placed Pamplonna. The third-dam is The Louisiana Girl, dam of champion Jess Louisiana Blue and Grade 2 winner The Louisiana Cartel.

The sale saw 267 horses trade hands of the 383 through the ring, recording gross receipts of $5,296,700. An average price of $22,197 and median of $16,000 was made. A buy-back rate of 43% accounts for 116 yearlings who failed to meet their reserve price.

During last year's sale 251 horses were reported sold for gross receipts of $6,004,300, an average of $23,922 and median of $14,000.

Saturday's second high-seller Hip 241 A Twisted Cowboy brought a final bid of $100,000 from Carlos Ponce. The son of leading first-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 from the Tempting Dash mare Twisted Dash was consigned by Granada Farms, Agent for Mark E. Rigby, DVM.  This is the family of Ruidoso QH Derby(G1) winner Tough To Bee.

Heavy Hitters Racing Stables paid $88,000 for Saturday's third high-seller, Hip 310 Kiss My Maruska. Granada Farms, Agent for Tyler & Naia Graham consigned the Kiss My Hocks colt out of the Favorite Cartel mare Ms Highmaitenance, dam of stakes-placed Brock Landers. This is the family of stakes winner The Black Alliance and G3 winner Bee Dashing.

The high-selling filly over two-days was Hip 351 Shes Famous, a daughter of One Famous Eagle from the Johannesburg (TB) mare Mombassa. Blackmon Quarter Horses LLC paid $65,000 for the filly cosigned by Granada Farms, Agent for Ken O'Brien. The second dam is AQHA Dam of Distinction Fearless Freda by Dash For Cash.

Five yearlings over the two-day sale broke the six-figure mark.  All yearlings passing through the sale ring are elgible for the 2024 $700,000-est. TQHA Yearling Sale Futurity(RG1).

Equifine LLC was the sale's leading buyer with eight purchases for gross receipts of $194,000. Renee Wilson signed the time on five yearlings totaling $190,000 and Jose R. Espinosa paid $179,500 for five head.

Bobby D. Cox was the sale's leading consignor or agent with 13 head grossing $774,500. Bielau Oaks, Agent sold 14 head for $293,600 and Granada Farms Agent had 13 head sale for $285,000.  Granada Farms, Agent for two other individuals were also the 5th and 6th leading consignor.

One Famous Eagle was the leading sale sire (by average with two or more sold) with two yearlings averaging $110,000. Favorite Cartel had two head average $95,00 and leading first-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 had five head average $65,600.

Chilitos was the leading first-crop sale sire (by average with two or more sold) with 26 yearlings average $19,642.
