MJ Farms Bred Superfecta Sweeps New Mexican Spring Futurity

SUNLAND PARK, NM—MAY 5, 2019—Four MJ Farms' state-bred 2-year-olds finished 1-2-3-4 in a blanket finish to the 25th edition of the Grade 2 (Restricted) $393,483 New Mexican Spring Futurity Sunday afternoon as Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino closed out their 2018-2019 live racing season.

Ridden by champion jockey Ricky Ramirez, Honky Tonk Daddy (10-1) held off fastest qualifier and post time favorite Colby James by a neck while completing the 300 yards in :15.127 seconds, a 95 speed index with a 12 mph tailwind.

The $14,000 Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale graduate races for owner U S Alliance Logistic and is conditioned by Jose Luis Muela. A son of last year's leading third-crop sire Big Daddy Cartel, Honky Tonk Daddy is out of MJ Farms' Jesse James Jr mare Jenna James.

Honky Tonk Daddy entered the Spring Futurity final off the 8th fastest qualifying time when he broke his maiden at first asking April 13. He pocketed $184,937 for today's victory, pushing his earnings mark past $190,000 in only two career starts.

Fastest qualifier Colby James put in a gallant effort under jockey Alan Hernandez to finish second, earning $70,827. Also a Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale graduate, Colby James was purchased by owner Rex Wells for $15,000. Rodolfo Valles trains the Jesse James Jr gelding out of Sandy June Bug by Blushing Bug.

Third-place finisher Montevina, the highest of three Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Sale graduates at $20,000, also races for U S Alliance Logistic and trainer Muela. Esgar Ramirez finished a neck back on the Big Daddy Cartel filly out of Bridgette Bordeaux by Blushing Bug.

The MJ Farms-bred filly also won her career debut, a trial for the Spring Futurity, where she posted the 9th fastest time from 11 trial races. She earned $43,283 in today's event.

Completing the Superfecta of MJ Farms breds was fourth-place finisher Six Pack Fame, a son of Jesse James Jr who was a head-back under jockey Alonso Rivera. The 1-6-10-8 Superfecta returned $292.36.

MJ Farms bred seven of the 10 finalists in today $393,180 futurity final.

Completing the field were Daddys Sugar Momma, Burn One Down For Me, Princess Katelyn, Woman In Redd, Lewandosky and Ashleigh.
