Zoomin Coronado Puts Up Fastest Time In Four Weeks Of Training Races At Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—FEBRUARY 27, 2019—Zoomin Coronado stopped the timer for 250 yards in his training race at Remington Park in a time of 13.335 seconds Wednesday over a fast track. It was easily the fastest time of any horse since schooling races began here on Feb. 6.

The 2-year-old Quarter Horse gelded son of Coronado Cartel, out of the Shazoom mare Zoomin Follies, scored a speed index of 86 in the first race of the day with a 14 mph tailwind, but it wasn’t just a fluke of catching the backdraft.

This Stacy Charette-Hill-trained juvenile, ridden by jockey Jorge Torres, beat his competitors by lots of daylight, 2-¼ lengths, under a hand ride, never being asked for his best.

Zoomin Coronado is the second foal of Zoomin Follies, a half-sister to leading sires Pyc Paint Your Wagon and Ivory James.

Previously this month, the most impressive winner in a training race was Coronado Bay on Feb. 21, who won his heat in 13.631 seconds into a 20 mph headwind, for a speed index of 74.

It’s likely no coincidence that these two winners on different days were sired by 2013 Remington Park Futurity winner Coronado Cartel, a son of Corona Cartel who was the #2 Leading First-Crop Sire of money earners in 2018.

Both are trained by Charette-Hill. It appears her barn is stacked with some fine juvenile runners. Zoomin Coronado is owned and was bred by Michael Pohl of Montgomery, Texas.

Charette-Hill saddled Wednesday fastest three starters, including two winners on the program.

Charette-Hill's second and third fastest runners came out of Race 2 when Regal Tales defeated stablemate Southern Sunshine. The pair recorded :13.60 and :13.61 clocking's respectively for the 250 yards.

Regal Tales, a son of first-crop sire Wagon Tales, races for Charette-Hill's husband Randy Hill. An $8,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale repurchase, Regal Tales is the first foal from the winning A Regal Choice mare Regal Kate, a half-sister to seven black-type including Blue Ribbon Futurity(G1) winner Darkelly, Speedhorse Derby(G3) winner Ride My Wagon and Central Distance Challenge(G3) winner Shawns Quick Dash.

Runner-up in race 2 Southern Sunshine is a daughter of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon from the multiple stakes producing Shazoom mare Marys Southernpolicy. She is the dam of five black-type including stakes winners BP Cartels Policy and Bp First Class. This is the family of grade 2 winner and multiple stakes sire Southern Policy. Bred by Michael Pohl, Southern Sunshine races for owner Leann Burns.

In other training races Wednesday, the winners were Intocable Cartel (3rd race, 13.633, 74, trained by Luz Chavira, owned by Francisco J. Cornejo), Tres Of Hero (4th race, 13.777, 68, Jimmy Padgett, Top Roustabouts/Backhoe Service LLC), Uptowne Babe (5th race, 13.678, 72, Guillermo Valdivia, Sam W. Green), Determined Queen (6th race, 13.661, 73, Trey Wood, John Dulce), and Oh La Royale (7th race, 13.645, 73, Maria Barraza-Rodriguez, Manuel Coto).

Coronado Cartel was the only sire with duel winners, other sires joining Wagon Tales with 2-year-old winners today were Corona Cartel, Mr Jess Perry and Tres Seis.

Wednesday’s training races were held in misty, overcast conditions, with temperatures in the low 20s. Another seven training races are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28.
