SHELBYVILLE, IN—JUNE 16 2018—It was a perfect way for Owner Rose Bode to celebrate Father's Day Weekend. Her horse, Daddys Moe, rallied home to win the 16th running of the $129,600 Jaguar Rocket Futurity Saturday at Indiana Grand.

Starting from post 10 in the 10-horse final, Daddys Moe broke well but didn't appear to get an early advantage out of the gate. Hooked on Jordan and Luis Guerrero grabbed the early lead from the center of the track and was in prime position for the final strides. However, they had not felt the strength of Daddys Moe until the final strides. He picked up momentum and cruised by his opponents to win by one-half length.

He was tracked closely on the inside by stablemate Coronados Quiksilver, ridden by James Flores. The duo finished second by two lengths over Hooked On Jordan for third. The time of the 300-yard dash was :15.394 seconds, a new stakes record for the Jaguar Rocket Futurity. The previous stakes record was set in 2014 by Stinkin Rich and Aron Hunt in a time of :15.524.

"I love this horse," said Beltran. "He is so smart. When you take him to the track, he knows what he's doing. He works like an old horse and in the gate, he stands so quietly. He can break fast and if I just smooch to him a little, he takes off. He loves to run."

Daddys Moe was the heavy favorite of the field, paying $4.20, $2.80, $2.20 across the board. Coupled with second place finisher Coronados Quiksilver, they gave trainer Randy Smith a one-two finish in the race.

"He started out a little tough but he's become more focused now," said Smith, who is currently leading the Quarter Horse training standings for the fourth straight season at Indiana Grand. "He doesn't require anything special. He does the routine just like the rest of them in the barn."

Daddys Moe may not need anything special in the barn, but he holds a special place in owner-breeder Rose Bode's heart. He was the last horse that her father, Loren Schwade, was able to see before he passed away in 2016.

"This was the last horse that my dad visited before he passed away," explained Bode. "He couldn't walk in the straw so he came to the window of the stall and looked in at this baby. I have a photo of him looking through at the foal."

While kneeling down to pet the newborn foal by Carters Cartel as her father watched, Bode got a "charley horse" and told her dad that would be a good name. Although the name "Charlie" stuck as a nickname, Bode decided to choose a different name to honor the memory of her father.

"My dad always called me 'Moe' and I thought because of the connection to this horse, a perfect name for him would be Daddys Moe," explained Bode. "We still call him 'Charlie' around the barn, but what a perfect Father's Day gift to win this race. My daddy would be so proud. He loved the horses so much and he's the one that got me hooked on them when I was young."

Bode, who has a small farm south of Columbus, Ind., currently has three broodmares. She also has a foal on the ground out of Daddys Moe's dam, the Mr. Jess Perry mare Prairie Fire.

Daddys Moe is now two for three in his brief career. His win in the Jaguar Rocket Futurity now gives him more than $76,000 in career earnings.

The 16th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Wednesday, Nov. 7. Racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 p.m. EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 p.m. EST. Two special Thursday racing dates will be held July 19 and Sept. 6 with a 2:05 p.m. EST post time.
