Big Finish By Toughie Proves Best in Old Timers Classic

LETHBRIDGE, ALB—JUNE 24, 2017—A big finish under jockey Freddy Fuentes propelled graded winner Toughie to a one-length win over Mals First Down in the $8,141(US) Old Timers Classic (not black type) Saturday afternoon at Lethbridge. Er Cafe finished a half-a-length back in third.

Saddled by trainer William Leech, Toughie completed the 350 yards in :17.722 seconds, a 102-speed index into a 5-mph crosswind. It was the ninth career win in 13 starts for the 4-year-old daughter of Stel Corona.

Charles Stojan owns the winner of last year's Canada Cup Derby(RG3) and Evergreen Park Derby Challenge as well as the Canada Cup Futurity(RG3) as a 2-year-old.

Bred in California by Edward C. Allred, from the Hawkish mare Hard Lining, Toughie picked up $4,315(US) today to boost her earning total to more than $140,000.

Also, a multiple stakes winner, runner-up Mals First Down races for owners Charlie Weaselhead and Jim Plume. The Shazoom 6-year-old is from the barn of trainer William Leech and was ridden by Scott Sterr. The $2,117(US) second-place check brings the gelding's earnings mark to $54,600. Bill Robbins bred Mals First Down in Oklahoma from the First Down Dash mare First A Princess.

An Alberta homebred, racing for owner-trainer Donalda Cochrane, Er Cafe earned $977(US) for third. Martin Ortiz rode the multiple stakes-placed son of Tres Seis out of Hawks Halo by Hawkinson.

Bug Lil Magic, Cruisinfoourabruisin, Won Oak, Hrh Tres Royale and Experimental Rocket completed the field.
