Datona Doll Sets Top Mark in New Mexico Classic Cup Derby Trials

HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 16, 2016—With the top five qualifiers coming from the last heat, wind played a big factor in the three trials on Sunday for the New Mexico Classic Cup Derby(RG2) at Zia Park.

The opening trial (race 8) at Zia Park faced a 16 mph headwind, dropping to 12 in the second (race 9) and six in the final (race 10) trial.

Zia Derby(RG2) runner-up Datona Doll battled to a neck win over multiple stakes winner Air Force Won in the final trial to set the top qualifying time of :21.819 seconds, a 91 speed index.

Trainer Trey Wood saddled the daughter of Jesse James Jr to her fourth win in seven career starts for owners Mark and Annette McCloy. AQHA Racing champion jockey Ricky Ramirez had the riding call.

Bred by Benny and Donna Smith, from the Dean Miracle mare Maggies Miracle Lx, Datona Doll has earned more than $95,108. She kicked off her 2016 campaign at Remington Park when she posted the fastest time for the Grade 2 $359,550 Heritage Place Derby last May. In a blanket finish she was a close third in the Grade 2 final.

Already the winner of the Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge and the Rocky Mountain Derby this season, Air Force Won was making his first start since finishing a troubled third in the $88,200 Mile High Derby on August 13.

Ridden by jockey Jaime Leos, the son of champion Ketel Won held earned the second fastest clocking of :21.859 seconds, while finishing 1½ lengths ahead of a field that included the next three fastest qualifiers.

Trainer Guadalupe Chavez conditions the five-time winning gelding for owner Salvador Nava-Nava. Bred by Hughes Donaldson Horse Company, from the Major Rime mare Forced To Win, Air Force Won has earned $85,588.

RG2 Zia Derby winner Play Misty Foreme got his third consecutive win in the second trial to record the 6th fastest clocking of :22.235 seconds, into a 12 mph headwind.

Shae Cox conditions the Jesse James Jr gelding for owner Robert Smith. MJ Farms bred Play Misty Forme from the Blushing Bug mare Arbor Mist. He has compiled a (10) 4-1-0 record and eared $112,588.

Graded stakes winner Chickaloni was a half-length winner in the first trial while posting the 8th fastest time of :22.363 seconds, into a 16 mph headwind. Larry Chavez trains the Jess A Chicks filly for owners David and Ross Hinkins.

Bred by Dosi and Norma Alvarez from the Dash Ta Fame mare Machi Moon, last year's New Mexico Classic Cup Futurity(RG3) winner has earnings of $235,516.

Jesse James Jr sired five qualifiers while First Moonflash picked up three.
