SHAKOPEE, MN—JUNE 25, 2016—In just her third career start, Jess Paint Your Lips surged to a 1˝ length win and the fastest qualifying time from three trials race held Saturday for the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby.
The 10 fastest qualifiers, from the 26 three-year-olds who competed today, will return to Canterbury Park Saturday, July 10th to vie for the winner's share of a $68,250 yards over 400 yards.
Ridden by jockey Jorge Torres, Jess Paint Your Lips completed the 400-yard task in :20.173 seconds, a 93-speed index into a 28 mph crosswind. It was the third win in four career starts for the 3-year-old daughter of multiple stakes sire Jess Louisiana Blue.
After breaking her maiden in her first attempt, at Remington Park as a 2-year-old, Jess Paint Your Lips did not start again for over year. She got her second win April 23rd in an allowance and was third in her last start, her only loss, at Remington Park on May 27th.
Bred in Oklahoma by Michael Pohl, Jess Paint Your Lips races for Pohl and Leann Burns. She is out of the Corona Cartel mare Paint Your Lips, a sister to leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon.
Third in the RG3 Remington Park Oklahoma-bred Derby two races back, Ferrari James got back on a winning track in the final trial with a one-length victory over Kokko Wagon to set the second fastest time of :20.303 seconds, into a 36 mph crosswind.
Manuel Compos conditions the stakes-placed son of Ivory James for owner Alfredo Botello. Bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith, Ferrari James has won four of eight starts and earned $65,764. Jose Tapia was aboard the gelding out of Ferarri Fast Prize, by Mr Jess Perry.
AQRA President's Spring Derby winner Justified defeated recent Gopher State Derby winner Eagle Span in the second trial to set the fourth fastest qualifying time of :20.451 seconds.
Tim Holloway saddled the son of champion Foose for himself and David Perry. Bred by Lucas Racing Inc. and Vaughn Cook, the Texas-bred was ridden by Chase Clark. He has compiled a (5) 3-1-0 record and earned $30,467.
Jason Olmstead saddled three finalists, Stacy Charette-Hill and Robert Don Johnson each got two.
