Cypress Sally Breaks 24-Year-Old Track Record In Sherm Handley/Ed Giles Memorial Futurity Trials

Cypress Sally Breaks 24-Year-Old Track Record In Sherm Handley/Ed Giles Memorial Futurity Trials

OGDEN, UT—MAY 21, 2016—Coming off a fourth place finish in the Dixie Downs Futurity in April, Cypress Sally rolled to a new track record at Webber Downs Saturday after winning the last of 10 trials for the Sherm Handley/Ed Giles Memorial Futurity by 3½ lengths.

The 10 fastest 2-year-olds, from the 68 head who started on Saturday, will return to the Ogden, Utah racetrack on Saturday, June 4th to vie for the winner's share of a $66,500 purse over 350 yards.

Ridden by jockey Jesus Canales, Cypress Sally completed the 350 yards in :17.564 seconds, a 109 speed index, to set the fastest qualifying time and record a new track record at Webber.

Abadasher established the previous record of :17.660 seconds on July 24, 1992.

Cypress Sally was the first of four finalists saddled by trainer Chancy Spencer and two finalists for owner/breeders A and C Racing and Roping. The daughter of Winners Version got her second win in three starts. Chad Richard bred the sorrel filly in Utah from the Dashin Is Easy mare Luscious Legs.

A and C Racing and Roping also qualified their homebred Brookstone Bay gelding, Captain Cruz, a two length winner in the 9th trial (race 10). Ridden by Uriel Dominguez Captain Cruz posted the 5th fastest time of :17.861.

Spencer also qualified 3rd fastest qualifier Cir Just Perfect, a Jesse James Jr winner of the second trial in :17.832 seconds; and 7th qualifier Cir Stylin Mr Jess, by Dashin Mr Jess, with a :17.891 clocking. Both two-year-olds are Utah-breds for owner/breeder Gary Robinson.

Owner-trainer Jere Brinkerhoff saddled second fastest qualifier Oh So Fancy Fancy, a one-length winner in the first trial. Also ridden by Canales, the daughter of second crop sire One Sweet Jess completed the 350 yards in :17.641 seconds, earning a 106 speed index. Bred in California by Dean Frey, Oh So Fancy Fancy is out of the Chicks Beduino mare Oh So Arrogant.

Recent South Valley Futurity winner I B Valiant stumbled at the break before being righted by jockey Alan Miramontes in time to win by a half-a-length and lock in the final qualifying time of :17.928 seconds, a 97 speed index. Ramon Salvidrez owns-and-trains the daughter of first crop sire Mighty B Valiant from the Royal Quick Dash mare Royal Belles. Walther Chaney is the breeder.
