Hammes, Smith Dominate Cherry Creek Futurity Trials

Hammes, Smith Dominate Cherry Creek Futurity Trials

AURORA, CO—MAY 20, 2016—Trainer John Hammes and jockey Stormy Smith dominated five trials for the Cherry Creek Futurity Friday afternoon—opening day of Arapahoe Park's 2016 live-racing season.

Hammes, a leading Colorado conditioner, saddled half the field of finalists including fastest qualifier Who You Know. Smith had the riding call on four of those qualifiers.

The 10 fastest, from the 33 Colorado-bred 2-year-olds who participated in the today's trials, will return to the mile-high racecourse on Sunday, June 5th to vie for the winner's share of a $75,000-added purse over 330 yards.

Coming off a third place maiden effort at Remington Park in her first start March 26th, Who You Know posted a one-length victory in the second trial to lockdown the fastest time of :17.122 seconds, an 85 speed index into a 5 mph headwind.

Hammes conditions the daughter of leading sire One Famous Eagle for himself and Tom Bradbury. The homebred is out of the graded winner Shazooms Doll, by Shazoom.

The trio of Hammes, Bradbury and Smith also qualified Stir Up Fun, a half-sister to fastest qualifier Who You Know, with the fourth fastest time of :17.344 seconds. The daughter of champion sire Desirio was caught at the wire in the first trial by second fastest qualifier Carvers Corona.

Hammes other finalists includes Kissin Coronas, a game second in the trial five to qualify 6th, trial three winner In Kuh Hoots, by first crop sire One Dashing Eagle, with the 8th fastest time and final qualifier Late N Dirty, a One Sweet Jess filly who was third in the trial 4.

Trainer Miguel Pena saddled Carvers Corona to her first career win, in her first attempt, in the aforementioned trial 1. The daughter of world champion Waver Carver posted the second fastest time of :17.278 seconds. Edwin Pena was aboard the gray filly for owner Juan Gonzales. Martin Gutierrez bred Carvers Corona from the Corona Casanova mare Adriannas Corona.

Jess Louisiana Blue from the This Snow Is Royal mare Snowing Money. Ramiro Garcia was up.

Mariwon Oh, a son of multiple stakes winner Jess Jones, won the fourth trial by half-a-length to record the 7th qualifying time of :17.511 seconds. The Fidel Roybal homebred was making his second career start for trainer Miguel Pena. Fernando Camacho had the riding call on the sorrel gelding out of Glow N Go Tell, by Genuine Strawfly.
