PHOENIX, AZ—APRIL 10, 2016—Second crop sire One Sweet Jess sired all three trial winners and four finalists Sunday for the $30,000-added Desert Classic Futurity at Turf Paradise.
The 10 fastest qualifiers, from two trials with entries sires by participating stallions, will return to the Phoenix racetrack on Sunday, May 1ST and vie for the winner's share the purse at a distance of 300 yards.
Ridden by jockey Rodolfo Arvizu, Magical Jess broke well and held off Countless Ways to win the second trial by a neck while setting the top qualifying time of :15.863 seconds into a 12 mph headwind on a sloppy (sealed) racecourse.
Trainer Mario Loza saddled the first-time winner for owner Ugo De La Torre. Magical Jess was bred in California by EG High Desert Farms from the Red Hot Rhythm mare Magic And Rhythm.
Countless Ways closed steadily to get the second fastest time of :15.904 seconds. Carlos Marquez had the riding assignment aboard the Tr Dasher gelding for trainer Gilberto Hernandez. Jose Gallardo owns the sorrel California-bred out of Million Ways, by Raise A Secret. Bred by Edward C. Allred, Countless Ways was also making his first start.
Magnificent Jess, another One Sweet Jess 2-year-old, owned by Ugo De La Torre, trained by Mario Loza and ridden by Rodolfo Arvizu won the final trial by a neck to post the third fastest time of :15.912 seconds, into a 6 mph headwind.
Jose and Gustavo De La Torre bred the sorrel filly in California from the Check Him Out mare Last To Check Him Out. This was her first start.
The first trial went to Ugo De La Torre's homebred One Sweet Jess filly Anabella. Also trained by Loza and ridden by Arvizu, the sorrel filly posted the 9th qualifying time of :16.203 seconds into a 12 mph headwind. Anabella is out of the Willie Wanta Dash mare Willie Swings.
The only other trainers with multiple qualifiers were Matthew Fales who saddled Frozen Icon by first crop sire Texas Icon to the 5th fastest time and Sweet Babie James, a One Sweet Jess filly to the 8th fastest time and Benito Vega with 4th fastest Eyeaseagull, a Eyesameasy filly, and 10th qualifier Latin Beauty, by Dale Schism.
