LOS ALAMITOS, CA— APRIL 18, 2015—Jaime Gomez is off to a tremendous start to the 2015 season. The trainer has now won 14 races this year with a 37% win ratio while recently sweeping the El Primero Del Ano and La Primera Del Ano derbies.

Gomez’s 2-year-olds are also shining. He saddled Bobby Cox’s Carnegie Haul to a solid victory on April 10 and on Saturday night he saddled the Corona Cartel colt Docs Best Card to one of the most impressive victories by a 2-year-old this season.

Ridden by Carlos Huerta, who is developing into one of the elite Quarter Horse riders at Los Alamitos, Docs Best Card ran a bit awkwardly at the start of his racing debut. The Dutch Masters III-bred runner broke in and bumped and then moved out and nearly bumped his outside rival. But then it all came together for the talented sprinter.

Once Huerta straightened him out and helped him find his stride, Docs Best Card showed his power while cruising to an easy ¾ length victory in a time of :15.897. Highly regarded coming into the race, Docs Best Card did not disappoint his backers as the even money favorite.

“He didn’t break and he ran greenly, but then he took off,” said Gomez, who owns Docs Best Card. “Carlos is riding a high level right now. He’s just so focused in being a top jockey and it’s paying off.”

Docs Best Card is a half brother of champion and Kindergarten Futurity winner Secret Card, Kindergarten winner Twin Spires, Golden State Derby winner Docs Apollo, and current sprinter One More Card. He is eligible to compete in the trials to the Kindergarten Futurity on Sunday, May 3, but Gomez could opt to run him a different set of trials.

“I’ll have to decide if I want to run him in the Kindergarten or wait into the Ed Burke Million Futurity trials at 350 yards (on Sunday, June 7),” he said. “This horse is going to love running longer distances.”

The Grade 2 Kindergarten has a projected purse of $300,000. The Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity has a projected purse of $1 million and also serves as the first leg of the $1 million Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza, which is the track’s version of the Triple Crown.

In Saturday’s other race for 2-year-olds, Joaquin Melero’s Tellem Im Sweet posted a solid effort to win her career debut in a time of :15.909. The Idaho-bred filly by Hadtobenuts was purchased at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale for just $6,000.

“The owner liked the pedigree and in fact she was the first horse that he tried to by the sale last year,” said trainer Guillermo Morales. “He went after her and he got her. It’s great when that happens and then it works out like it did tonight. This filly has done everything right. She actually arrived at my barn a little late so we had to rush her a little to get her ready. I always decided to skip this race and just go to the Kindergarten without a race under her belt. Fortunately things worked out and now she’s got two weeks to rest before the Kindergarten trials.”

Tellem Im Sweet’s mother is Just Wanna Be Teller, a half sister to Hialeah Derby and Indiana Live QHRAI Derby winner Tortuga Tony (a winner of over $238,097, and El Primero Del Ano Derby finalist Stel Just Me. This family also includes All American Futurity third place finisher Devons Signature.Samuel Mendez piloted Tellem Im Sweet from post number four. She returned $7.80 for the win.
