LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 6, 2016—Obi Juan Kanobi and Luv On The Run, the second and third place finishers in the Fullerton Handicap in their last start, will rematch in the $20,000 James Smith Memorial Handicap for 3-year-olds on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Live racing at the Orange County oval will immediately follow the final race on the card at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Trained by Elena Andrade for owner Eladin Flores, Obi Juan Kanobi outdueled some strong rivals to finish second in the Fullerton at 350-yards. The First Down Dash gelding posted an allowance win in his start before the Fullerton and as a 2-year-old he was second in a trial to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. Ramon Sanchez will ride the homebred runner from post five.
Jesus Nava’s Luv On The Run is a household name in handicap races by now. This will be his fifth stakes races in less than nine months and he’s been third or better in all four of his previous starts. Jose Nicasio will ride the Favorite Cartel colt from post four for trainer Guillermo Morales.
The field will also feature Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes runner-up Flay and Costa Mesa Handicap runner-up Coach Carter. Recent allowance winners Strawfinders Jessee and Freakish plus Apollitical Gamble will complete the field.
The card will also feature 22 freshman competing in three maiden races. Cina and John Sperry’s Stelfast, a star in morning works, will head the seventh race.
