Fifty-Five 2-Year-Olds Entered in John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge Trials
BY MICHAEL CUSORTELLI
HOUSTON, TX–MAY 23, 2023–Recent maiden winners Fire Cowboy and Ripsnorter are among the 55 2-year-olds entered in Friday's 350-yard John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3) trials at Sam Houston Race Park.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday's six heats will meet in the June 16, $40,000-added final.
A 22,000 yearling purchase at last year's Los Alamitos Equine Sale, Fire Cowboy made his debut with a nose victory in a 330-yard Sam Houston Futurity (G2) trial on May 12. Juan Diaz Jr. trains the gelded son of Flying Cowboy 123 for owner Emmanuel Villarreal.
Fire Cowboy drew post 8 and will be ridden by Jose Herbert in the second trial.
Ripsnorter races for Tommy Hays from the barn of trainer Adan Guzman. A homebred daughter of Open Me A Corona, Ripsnorter made her career debut with a three-quarter length win in a 300-yard, $17,500 maiden-special-weight dash at Sam Houston on May 4.
Ripsnorter drew post 3 and will be ridden by Noe Villatoro in the fifth heat.
