SHAKOPEE, MN – JULY 7, 2020 - In the last of six stakes, High On Chablis and Berkley Packer came home well clear in the $26,648 Canterbury Park Distance Challenge.
High On Chablis ($6.20) won the 870-yard stake by over two lengths in 46.336 to earn a 91 speed index in his first stake win.
In the last race of the night to close out the all-Quarter Horse card at Canterbury on Tuesday evening, the stake was also the third regional AQHA Challenge qualifier of the day.
High On Chablis is a 5-year-old gelded son of High Rate Of Return, trained by Clinton Crawford for Jerry Blackmon, Mike Schau and Connie Nobles. Connie Nobles bred him in Oklahoma out of Toast of Chablis, by Toast to Dash.
High On Chablis now has three wins in 22 lifetime starts with $57,128 earned. This was his first win in five attempts at the distance and he is two for six lifetime at Canterbury Park.
Runner up Edelman is an 870-yard specialist, with 19 starts at the distance and several wins. The 6-year-old Favorite Cartel gelding was ridden by Ramiro Garcia for trainer John Hammes, who also co-owns with Nick Hammes.
Edelman was bred by Steve Burns DVM in California, out of the Katie Katella, by Separatist. Edelman was third in the 2019 edition of the Canterbury Park Distance Challenge. He has earned $53,759 in 27 lifetime efforts.
Summerhills Hero and Denny Velazquez were third in the final stake of the night for Clinton Crawford. A 4-year-old son of Valiant Hero, Summerhills Hero is owned and bred by Robert and Sandra Brown in Oklahoma, out of Tellher to Fly, by Teller Cartel.
Summerhills Hero has competed in hook races for his last four starts and has yet to finish off the board at the distance. This was his first stake race in his 13 career starts.
Completing the field were The Runaway Favorite and Jess A Final Diva.
