Fastest Qualifier Hoztile Takeover Draws Post 5 for $102,452 Mardi Gras Derby

BOSSIER CITY, LA–MARCH 26, 2024-–Ten state-bred sophomores, led by fastest qualifier Hoztile Takeover, are entered back in Friday's 400-yard, $102,452 Mardi Gras Derby (R) at Louisiana Downs.

A sorrel son of One Sweet Jess trained by Juan Diaz Jr. for owners Amanda St Amant and Luis Armando Castellanos, Hoztile Takeover made his 3-year-old season debut with a neck victory in the last of four Mardi Gras Derby trials on March 6. The gelding has won four of 11 races, including two of three at Louisiana Downs, and he has earned $225,169.

Hoztile Takeover ended his juvenile campaign with a third-place finish in the state's richest Quarter Horse race, the December 16, $1-million Louisiana QHBA Million Futurity (RG1) at Evangeline Downs. The gelding drew post 5 and will be ridden by Victor Urieta Jr.

Brian L. Gunder's One Cool Corona, a graded stakes winning son of Open Me A Corona trained by Santiago Villaseca, is coming off of a three-quarter length win in his trial. The gelding was coming off of a 2-year-old season during which he banked $215,447 from six outs and won the 350-yard, $449,000 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) at Delta Downs.

One Cool Corona drew post 3 and will be ridden by J.R. Ramirez.
