LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 9, 2020—Walker Family Trust’s Zoomin For Spuds will look to earn a record tying fifth berth to the prestigious Champion of Champions when he joins a strong field of older horses in the 60th running of the Grade 1, $125,000 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship here on Sunday night.

Nine outstanding runners will be in action in the Los Alamitos Championship with the winner earning a provisional berth to the December 12 Champion of Champions.

Zoomin For Spuds won the Champion of Champions as a 3-year-old in 2016 and has been a part of the 440-yard classic every year since then. If he is able to earn a fifth berth to the Champion of Champions and participates in this year’s classic, he would join the great Refrigerator, the event’s only three-time winner, and 2008 winner Jess You And I as the only horses with five appearances in the Champion of Champions.

Zoomin For Spuds, an Idaho-bred gelding by Zoomin For Bux, is also tied for sixth place at Los Alamitos with 12 stakes wins. A 13th stakes win would tie him with Flight 109 for fifth-place all-time here. Jose Nicasio will ride Zoomin For Spuds.

Ed Allred’s Chocolatito will also be part of this strong field and the Favorite Cartel already holds a berth to this year’s Champion of Champions after winning the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity on July 5.

The Scott Willoughby-trainee also won the Kaweah Bar Handicap earlier this year and was fourth in the Grade 1 Go Man Go Handicap in his most recent start on August 31. For his career, he’s finished in the top two in 12 of 17 starts.

The newest top runner in the older division at Los Alamitos is the Valentin Zamudio-trained Eagle Coast, who will make his local debut in the Los Alamitos Championship. He arrives after winning the 2019 Grade 1 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs and the 2018 Hobbs America Futurity at Zia Park. He won his only start of the year back at Sunland Park in February.

Bail Czech, winner of the (RG1) Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap and second in the Go Man Go, will be joined by 2018 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby winner Jesstacartel, Allred’s Grade 1 stakes finalist Transcend, Nutt & Turner Farms’ Grade 1 stakes placed runner Jess Macho Corona, stakes winner and 110-yard track record holder Rite Quick and multiple Grade 1 finalist Red Hawk Cartel will complete the field.

By the way, if Chocolatito wins then Powerful Favorite will receive a provisional berth to the Champion of Champions thanks to his Go Man Go victory.
