FARMINGTON, NM—APRIL 29, 2019—SunRay Park kicks off its 17-day spring meet with a 10-race program on Friday, topped by the 400-yard, $50,000 Animas Stakes for 3-year-olds.
A full field of 10 sophomores has been entered in the Animas, topped by 5-2 morning-line favorite Sure Fire Quick. Trained by Jesus Carrete for owners Ricardo A. Bernal and Reymundo F. Resendez, the gelded son of Walk Thru Fire will be making his first official start since October 7, when he ran third, one length behind winner Eagle Coast, in the 400-yard, $344,000 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.
Sure Fire Quick has earned $90,483 from seven starts, and he was a finalist in last year’s Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding drew post 5 and will be ridden by Alonso Rivera.
