A Look Ahead At Trial Hopefuls To The La Primera Del Ano Derby

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—FEBRUARY 23, 2019— Many of the top 3-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos Race Course have started preparing for what is shaping up to be a great night of trials to the La Primero Del Año Derby to be held on Sunday, March 9.

A total of 32 fillies remain eligible for the trials. Starting in 2020, this race will be renamed the Los Alamitos Oaks with a projected $400,000 purse. Here's a brief look at some of the big names eyeing this year's trials.

Capitol Grille - She was runner-up to Cole Man 47 in the John Deere California Juvenile last year and also finished second in a trial to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. Her most recent drill was a :12.4 work at 220 yards on November 3.

Favorite Wise Lady - Finished second to recent Grade 1 winner Powerful Favorite in last year's Governor's Cup Futurity. She was first or second in her first five career starts, but was eighth in her most recent outing, a trial to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby on Jan. 19. Worked 350 yards from the gate in :18 flat on February 19.

Hot Little Kiddy - Fourth in the Governor's Cup Futurity in her final start of 2018, she returned with a fifth place finish in an allowance event on February 15.

Jess Send It - Worked 350-yards from the gate in :17.70 on February 19. She won three of her first six outings and was third to KR Hi Five in the Grade 2 John Deere Juvenile Challenge on Nov. 17.

Mayas Signature - Showed tons of quickness and eventually finished fourth in Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes on Feb. 17. Won her Maiden Stakes trial and has been in the top four in all seven career starts.

Seaduction - Winner in three of five career starts, including the Golden State Juvenile Stakes. Won her Los Alamitos Two Million trial on the way to qualifying to California' s richest race of 2018.

Symbol Of Faith - Finished second to Dexxter in their Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity trial and prior to that she was seventh in the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity final. She finished fifth in the Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park.

Terrific First Down - Finished a strong third in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby, only behind the outstanding Powerful Favorite and runner-up Red Hawk Cartel. Has hit the board in six of eight starts.

Wave Her Down - Started racing career with three wins in a row headed by the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity. Has now lost her last three outings, but was third in her trials to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity.

You Caught My Eye - Favorite Cartel filly posted a 330-yard allowance win in :16.644 over Jess Bein Me and Parsons Rocket. Finished third in Governor's Cup Futurity and eighth in Golden State Million Futurity.
