Diabolical Dame Returns In Carlos Salazar Stakes; Klassic Strawfly Is Morning-Line Choice For Inaugu

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—AUGUST 24, 2016—Making her return to New Mexico, Diabolical Dame is one of nine state-bred fillies and mares entered in Saturday’s 6 1/2-furlong, $60,000 Carlos Salazar Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Diabolical Dame is trained by Todd Fincher for owners Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant and Derrol Hubbard, who acquired the 4-year-old filly for $25,000 at the 2013 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Diabolical Dame is coming off of a fourth-place finish in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance-optional claiming race at Del Mar on July 27, but she has won 10 of her 14 starts in New Mexico, including five stakes.

Diabolical Dame drew post 4 and will be ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr. The filly’s eight opponents in the Carlos Salazar -- named in honor of the late long-time sports editor of the Albuquerque Tribune -- include R.D. Hubbard’s Stormy Day. A homebred 4-year-old filly by Attila’s Storm, Stormy Day is coming off of a three-quarter length victory in the 6-furlong, $50,000 Lincoln Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs on July 31.

Stormy Day drew post 5 and will be ridden by Elvin Gonzalez for trainer Bart Hone.

Quarter Horses take the stakes spotlight at Albuquerque Downs on Sunday, as a full field of 10 New Mexico-bred aged sprinters has been entered back in the inaugural running of the 440-yard, $150,000-estimated First Moonflash Maturity (R).

Klassic Strawfly, a 10-year-old gelding by Genuine Strawfly trained by Ron Stephens for owner Yaneth Cabrera, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite. Klassic Strawfly has won five of his last six races, including the May 27, 400-yard Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) at SunRay Park.

Isaias Cardenas will ride Klassic Strawfly from post 4.

Other First Moonflash Maturity contenders include BL Corona. A 5-year-old Southern Corona mare racing for Bertha S. Irigoyen and trained by Rene Saucedo, BL Corona will be seeking her first stakes win since November 25, when the mare outran her 40-1 odds to win the 400-yard New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park.

BL Corona’s season resume includes a third-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Too Flash For You, in the 350-yard, $85,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park on March 18. The mare drew post 9 and will be ridden by Edgar Martinez.
