LOS ALAMITOS, CA—FEBRUARY 28, 2010—Felix Aguallo Gonzalez's Brooklyn Boy set a new stakes record in the $134,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes after outdueling the Blane Schvaneveldt-trained Howlin Mad by a neck on Saturday at the Orange County track.
Ridden by Juan Andrade for trainer Carlos Gonzalez, Brooklyn Boy was fifth at the start but flew home the rest of the way to record a winning time of :17.225 over a wet fast track.
The clocking dropped the Maiden Stakes record by 11/100ths of a second. Keilani Farms' Tailgunner Tom had posted the previous mark in 2008.

"I still remember like it was yesterday when A Mere Splash won this race," said Jose Luis Gonzalez, who along with his son Allan, was in the winner's circle representing his father.
"We wanted to win this race again because we had such a great time winning it the first time. Eddie Garcia was the winning rider aboard A Mere Splash on that night and just before this race Eddie came up to me to wish me luck. It was a nice gesture to have a good friend like Eddie remember that we had won this race a few years ago. Juan Andrade is now riding our horses and he does a good job. He did a good job helping Brooklyn Boy win."
Brooklyn Boy had to endure a long inquiry on trial night just to be part of this race.
"After we survived the inquiry I thought we had a good chance in the final," he added. "We've always liked this horse since he was a baby. He was a good-looking baby and I'm glad we kept him. We don't have his mother anymore (Dashing Dominique). We sold her to a horseman in Mexico. She was pregnant with The Chocolate Rocket baby. At the time we had quite a few mares and we decided to sell a couple. She was one of the ones we sold. Actually we gave her away but that was before Brooklyn Boy. Maybe we can buy her back."
The bay runner, who earned $56,280 for his effort, is the son of The Chocolate Rocket, a solid stallion who also sired Los Alamitos Winter Derby winner A Mere Chocolate. The son of Corona Cartel stands at Will Woods Farm in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
"We think highly of Brooklyn Boy," he continued. "We think he has the potential to be among the top 3-year-olds this season. We named him Brooklyn Boy because I'm a huge fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and a big admirer of the team's Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully. I named this horse in his honor."
Sent off at 7-5 odds, Brooklyn Boy improved his record to two wins from five starts. He has never finished worse than second. His career earnings now stand at $64,207.
Jose Luis credited his trainer, who is also his cousin, Carlos Gonzalez.
"He loves the sport. He eats, breathes, and thinks Quarter Horses all of the time," he concluded.
Arthur Nielsen's Howlin Mad, a gelded son of Be Real Quick, earned $22,780 for finishing second under jockey Zacharie Kelsey. FF Racing Stables' Secret Path by Walk Thru Fire picked up a check for $16,080 for running third.
AB Another Runner, a full brother to champion and All American Futurity(G1) winner Ab What A Runner finsihed fourth. The Royal Quick Dash gelding is owned by Ronald Ore-Giron of Gilbert, Arizona. Champion trainer Paul Jones saddled.
Ore-Giron also owns the paint stallion Decash who's first crop will race this year. The Real Easy Cash stallion is out of the champion AQHA mare Deelish and from the immediate family of 2009 #2 leading first crop sire Fredericksbrug.
B Zoom, Stelly Savalas, Montana Cartel, Stel Master, Lite My Fyre, and fastest qualifier Jus Ledoux It completed the field. Jus Ledoux It bumped on both sides leaving the gate and was never in contention.
