Called A Dynasty (22-1) Upsets $45,000 John Andreini Memorial Stakes

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM–MAY 29, 2023–Called A Dynasty (22-1) got his first career stakes win on Monday when he surprised a field of 10 in the $45,000 John Andreini Memorial Stakes as Ruidoso Downs wound down its opening Memorial Day weekend race card.

After a slight delay, when four horses were returned to the saddling paddock for equipment changes, Called A Dynasty  took advantage of post-time favorite and multiple grade 1 winner Bomb Cyclone's stumble at the start and lane change to prevail over six runners who hit the wire in a blanket finish to the 350 yard stakes event.

Under jockey Damian Corral, Called A Dynasty completed the 350 yards in :17.370 seconds, equaling a 97 speed index with a 10 mph tailwind. The $27,000 winner's purse boosted his bankroll to $83,530.

Trainer Lee Gutierrez conditions the son of three-time world champion sire FDD Dynasty for owners Christian Salcido and Alfonso Molina. Bred in Oklahoma by Michael Teel, from the Mr Jess Perry mare Callas Maybe, Called A Dynasty has won four consecutive races.

Runner-up Valiant Charm finished a head back to earn $9,000 for second. Owner-trainer Juan Esquivel named jockey Emilio Tapia to ride the Valiant Hero 4-year-old out of Charmin Chief Corona by Chief Corona. Gary and Randal Kurz bred the Grade 3 West Texas Maturity runner-up in Texas.  Also second in the All American Juvenile at 2, Valiant Charm has banked $182,797.

Also making his first stakes appearance and earning his first black type Regalo Coronados, a 5-year-old son of multiple stakes sire Coronado Cartel, finished a neck back to earn $4,500 for third. Trainer Carlos Acosta, Jr. named jockey Adrian Ramos to ride the horse for owner Victor Marroquin. Patrick Easter bred Regalo Coronados in Missouri from the Dashing Val mare Dianes Easter Gift. He has earned $72,441.

Called A Dynasty returned $44.80 to win, $16.20 to place and $8 to show. Valiant Charm paid $8 to place and $4.80 to show while Regalo Coronados returned $12.20 to show. The 3-9-4 $1 trifecta returned $6,069.

Completing the field were Hesa Party Wagon, Alamo Lake, Bomb Cyclone, Mitey Political, Lethal Avenger, Be Quiet and Artillero.

Monday’s stakes event is named after the late John Andreini, one of four partners who purchased Ruidoso Downs Race Track in 2017. Mr. Andreini was a lifelong advocate of higher education and each year the race track awards scholarships to graduating seniors involved in the horse racing industry.

The 2023 Andreini Scholarship recipients include: Brianna Flores, Kaylee Joiner, Itzel Parga, Montana McMinn, Jose Munoz, Dylian Martinez and Ashley Juarez.

Live racing at Ruidoso Downs will return Friday, June 2 with a 13 race card of trials for the Mountain Top New Mexico-bred QH Futurity at 350 yards. First post is 1:00 pm. (MDT).
