Stablesmates Stripsteak and Free Thought Win Saturday Stakes at Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB—JUNE 15, 2019—Rocky Mountain Turf Club in Lethbridge, Alberta hosted a pair of non-black type stakes races on Saturday's race program.

Old Timers Classic

Multiple stakes winner Stripsteak put in a big finish under jockey Ricardo Moreno to defeat Honor The Fast Man by 1-½ lengths in the $6,902(US) Old Timers Classic stakes (not black type) on Saturday afternoon at Lethbridge.

Trainer William H. Leech saddled the California-bred 4-year-old for owner Charles G. Stojan. Stripsteak completed the 400 yards in :19.673 seconds, equaling a 106 speed index with a 12 mph tailwind.

Steve Burns, DVM bred the nine-time winning son of One Sweet Jess in California from the Separatist mare Ruths Chris. Today's winners' purse of $3,658(US) boosted Stripsteak's earnings total to more than $44,000.

Also a multiple stakes winner, Honor The Fast Man picked up $1,795(US) for finishing second. Owned-bred and trained by Tom Kenway, the bay gelding is by Honor The Perry from the Heza Fast Man mare Buckle High. Bred in Alberta, Honor The Fast Man has earned $71,268. Scott Sterr had the riding assignment.

True Copy, a graded stakes winning stablemate of Stripsteak, finished a neck in third for owner Stojan and trainer Leech. D. I. Benitez rode the 4-year-old Tr Dasher filly out of Realistically by Separatist. Bred in California by Edward C. Allred, True Copy has banked $64,836.

Canadian Timber and Glittering Blue completed the field.

Whoop Up Classic

In the $6,566(US) Whoop Up Classic stakes (not black type), Free Thought won with authority under jockey Ricardo Moreno. The California-bred stakes winning son of Steal Corona defeated Cr Crusin For Chicks by 1-½ lengths.

The 8-year-old completed the 660 yard course in :33.439 seconds, a 118 speed index with a 12 mph tailwind. It was the 24th career win in 46 starts for the Charles G. Stojan owned gelding.

Trainer William H. Leech conditions Free Thought who was bred in California by Edward C. Allred from the Pritzi Dash mare Just Think. The $3,480(US) winners' purse boosted his career bankroll to $98,425.

Racing for owner-trainer Alison Clapton, runner-up Cr Crusin For Chics earned $1,708(US) for finishing second. Jockey Jose Rocha rode the 6-year-old Zoomin For Bux gelding out of Thischicsdashing by Dashing Val. Roger Gauthier bred the $17,701 earner in Alberta.

Owner-trainer Deanne Davies saddled Big Hoss Rollin to a third-place finish, 1-¼ quarter lengths back. Adrian Gonzalez was aboard the 7-year-old Zillas Spin Doctor gelding out of Sables Val by Dashing Val. Sazwan Speed Horses bred the stakes winner of more than $63,000 in Alberta.

Gone To Be Bright and Its Official finished fourth and fifth.
