Coronas Bar Rallies To Win Grants Pass Derby

GRANTS PASS, OR—JULY 8, 2018—Coronas Bar, a brother to champion and leading first-crop sire Five Bar Cartel, rallied to get his neck in front of fastest qualifier Corona B Gone in the $13,000 Grants Pass Derby (not black type) Sunday afternoon in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Ridden by jockey Ruben Luzano, Coronas Bar and Corona B Gone were in tight quarters as they were side-by-side while battling to the wire. The brown colt completed the 400 yards in a quick :19.564 clocking to earn a 114 speed index.

Trainer Danny Montes saddled the son of leading live sire Corona Cartel to his second career win for owner/breeder San Gregorio Racing Stables, Inc. The California-bred is out of stakes winner and multiple stakes producer Five Bar Molly by Dash Ta Fame. He has compiled a (17) 2-4-1 record and today's $5,200 winners' purse booted his earnings to $18,742.

Fastest qualifier and post-time favorite Corona B Gone was a game second under jockey Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa. Hector Magallanes saddled the multiple stakes-placed son of Favorite Cartel for owner Ruben Magallanes. Bred in Oregon by Michael and Shannon McKay, Corona B Gone has banked more than $27,000. Out of Go Girl Gone by Shazoom, he also earned a 114 speed index.

Stakes winner L Bar D Razle Dazle finished another neck back in the blanket finish to take third. Also an Oregon-bred trained by Magallanes, L Bar Razle Dazle races for owners Tryn Espelien and Herman Torres. Darrell and Linda Sanders bred the Ragazzo gelding from the Strawfly Special mare Dash Home Deb. The $1,950 third-place check boosted his lifetime mark to $36,151. Jose Guerreo was riding.

Okey Dokey Road, Cm Once Ina Bluemoon, Inseperable Two, Morning Brew and Teccate completed the field.
