LOS ALAMITOS, CA— APRIL 24, 2015—Legacy Ranch and Muller Racing’s Jess Flying By began her racing career in powerful fashion, as the filly sired by the champion Mr Jess Perry and out of 2010 champion 2-year-old filly Flying Fig won her debut by 1 ½ lengths on Friday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Tony Guymon for trainer Denny Ekins, Jess Flying By was first from the start from post number five. Bred in California by Legacy Ranch and Muller, the filly led by ¾ lengths early on and continued to open up her lead from there.
Her dam, Flying Fig, enjoyed a great racing career. A winner of four races, Flying Fig finished in the money in 11 of 17 career starts and was named the AQHA Racing Champion filly in 2010. She earned $806,920 in her career, a bankroll boosted by runner-up finishes in the Ed Burke Million Futurity, Golden State Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.
Ed Allred’s For Pee Jay, a Foose filly from the family of Hot Hitter, Freaky, Hard Hitting, and Lassen County, finished in second place. Scott Willoughby saddled For Pee Jay.
“I think this horse is one for later in the year,” O’Dell said. “He is going to like longer distances. He’s from the same family as (three-time distance champion) Sign Of Lanty. I feel fortunate to have some very nice babies this year. Bob and Connie Rosenthal purchased three nice babies this year and the Parsons Family also has some very nice babies. They have some babies out of (Grade 1 winner) Terrific Energy that I like a lot.”
Steve and Kristin Eller bred Keepitinthecard, who came into his debut after a :12.30 work on April 2. Runner-up Our Dicey FFM is a full brother to 2006 All American Futurity winner No Secrets Here. Vessels Stallion Farm bred Our Dicey FFM, who is trained by Denny Ekins.
