Rock Princess Gets Up To Win Corona Cartel Stakes at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 19, 2014—Jack Manning and Tammy Johnson's homebred Rock Princess got up at the wire Saturday afternoon to defeat Winter Is Coming by a nose in the $100,000 Corona Cartel Stakes for 3-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs. Cr Tuckernuck showed late interest to finish a neck back in third.

Saddled by Ms. Johnson and ridden by Ricardo Aguirre, Rock Princess drifted in while completing the 440 yards in :21.458 seconds to pickup the winner's purse of $42,000. It was the second career win and first stakes victory for the daughter of multiple stakes sire Rock Solid Jess. The homebred, out of A Classic Serenade by Chicks Beduino, has earned $57,982.

Joe Badilla, Jr. rode Winter Is Coming to her second place effort for owner Sunset Well Service, Inc. and trainer Michael Chavez. Dunn Ranch, Ltd. bred the FDD Dynasty filly in Texas from the Mr Jess Perry mare Queen Of Torts. The $18,000 place check pushed her earnings to $54,232.

Cr Tuckernuck who was a finalist in the $900,000 Ruidoso Derby(G1) last month earned his black-type under jockey Berkley Packer. Stacey Capps conditions the Jet Black Patriot gelding for 12-year-old owner Kharlottie Grace Urschel. Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith bred the $97,840 earner in Oklahoma from the Corona Cartel mare Fast Prize Corona. He picked up $10,000 for Saturday's effort.
