MISSION, TX—JANUARY 28, 2012—In perhaps the first test for two-year-olds of the new racing season, One Fast Wagon debuted with an impressive 4 ½ length romp to post the top qualifying time for the $70,700 Royal Shake Em Futurity.
The fastest six qualifiers, from 14 trial races to the unofficial 250 yard sprint, will return to the Las Palmas Race Park on Sunday, February 12th and vie for the $22,122 winner's purse.
A $34,000 TQHA summer sale yearling, One Fast Wagon completed her assignment in :13.0603 seconds, a 100 speed index. To put that in perspective, the second place horse in her race recorded a 71 speed index. The Pyc Paint Your Wagon filly races for Joe M. Flores, who teamed with trainer Jorge Barrera and jockey Sabino Reyes to qualify four of the six finalists.
Bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley, One Fast Wagon is out of an unplaced full sister to 2006 Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner and grade 1 producer Fast First Prize and Grade 2 winner and leading sire Heza Fast Dash. The Heza Fast Man mare is the dam of five ROM from five starters including the stakes-placed double-registered Prize Jive who has earned $77,659.
Robert and Karen Nunnally of Roberta, Georgia, who purchased Fast Mans Prize from Mrs. Stanley, were the consignors of One Fast Wagon to the TQHA Sale last July. The filly's second dam, First Prize Dash, is a former Broodmare of the Year and the dam of four Grade 1 winners. She is also a full sister to all-time leading AQHA Racing sire First Down Dash.
Barrera also saddled the second fastest qualifier, JMF Zoomin Pancho, for Flores. The homebred colt is by Shazoom out of the Southern Cartel mare RG Southern Lady. He posted a time of :13.175 while earning a 95 speed index.
The Flores/Barrera/Reyes team also had the third fastest qualifier, Captain Strawfly, who stopped the timer at :13.202, a 94 speed index. The colt, out of Strawfly Lady by Strawfly Special, is from the highly anticipated first crop of grade 1 placed Captain Courage, a Mr Jess Perry half-brother to leading sire Corona Cartel and leading first crop sire Valiant Hero. Burnett Ranches, Ltd. bred Captain Strawfly in Texas.
