First Crop Sires Dominate Mardi Gras Training Races

BOSSIER CITY, LA—JANUARY 27, 2012—First crop sires dominated 17 training races for the Mardi Gras Futurity entries on Friday at Louisiana Downs.

Seven of the top ten times recorded, including the four fastest from the 107 two-year-olds who went to the post, were sired by stallions getting their first crop the track.

The fastest two times went were posted by two-year-olds sired by Grade 2 winner Coronas Leaving You. The son of leading sire Corona Cartel won nine of 13 career starts, earning $278,358.

Dash For Coronas, a colt owned by Javier Ramirez of Bedford, Texas, recorded a :12.278 time over the 220 yards while winning the 7th race by 1 ¼ lengths. Natalie Montgomery, DVM, bred the brown stallion from the First Down Dash mare Azure Dash.

The biggest trial winner of the day was Downtown Corona who ran the second fastest time of :12.346 in the final race (17) while winning by 2-1/4 lengths. Isaac Lavine of Lake Charles, Louisiana owns the gelded son of Coronas Leaving You out of Down Town Diva, by First Down Dash. Kirt Chaisson is the breeder.

Ugotdatlook, sired by the deceased grade 1 placed Look Forward, won the third race in :12.357 seconds for owner Oscar Lopez of Deridder, Louisiana. The $4,000 LQHBA Summer Sale yearling is out of the Royal Sovereign mare Miss Daylight Royal.

First crop sire Strong Hope sired Mister First Call, winner of the first race by one length while getting the fourth fastest time of :12.40. The homebred owned by Wilfred Roberts III is out of Jess Rakin, by Rakin In The Cash. Strong Hope, a $209,000 grade 1 placed stakes winner, is a half-brother to leading sire Dashin Bye.

Other first crop sires represented in the top ten were Sir Runaway Dash with the sixth fastest time and Jet Black Patriot who sired the eighth and 10th fastest runners on Friday.

Leading sires Game Patriot and Jess Louisiana Blue had the fifth and seventh runners while Midnight Knight rounded out the "top ten" with the ninth time.
