Flyin Fish Gets Moonstone Win After Skyline Lover's Disqualification

HIALEAH, FL—JANUARY 22, 2012—Flying Fisch was named the winner of the $27,000 Moonstone Stakes at Hialeah Park on Sunday afternoon.

Skyline Lover, who was looking for his seventh straight stakes win at Hialeah Park, won the race by two lengths but was disqualified for interference after lugging in while leaving the chute in the 660 yard race. The stewards posted the inquiry sign immediately after Skyline Lover crossed the finish line and, after receiving additional objections from one jockey and two trainers, ruled that the original first-place finisher had interfered with both Flyin Fish and Louisianafeature One.

The interference started a chain reaction across the track, causing the judges to place the Feature Mr Jess gelding eighth and last behind Louisianafeature One.

Racing for Double Eagle Ranch Inc. and Buena Suerte Equine, Flyin Fish picked up the $16,200 winner's purse to push his earnings to nearly $95,000. Richard Sedillo trains the Fishers Dash 4-year-old with Brian Theriot riding.

Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC and P.K. Thomas bred the gelding in California from the Jazzing Hi mare Jazzing Cheree. Coming off a 3-year-old season that included qualifying to the $1.3 million All American Derby(G1) at Ruidoso Downs, Flying Fish has a 4-5-1 record from 18 starts.

Sheri Galvez and Betty Marshall's Royal Quick Dash gelding, Royal Initiative, was moved to second, picking up $5,400. Also trained by Sedillo, the 5-year-old was ridden by Adam Martinez. Belinda Shaw bred Royal Initiative in Arkansas from the Six Fortunes mare Fortuna Babe.

Moved to the show position, Special Ela, earned $2,700 for owner/breeder Lucas Racing, LLC. The Special Leader 4-year-old filly is out of the royally bred Leaving Memories mares, Ocean Memories. Ron Raper trains with Cody Wainscott riding.

Completing the order of finish were Checotah Dale, Heza Fast Corridor, Arbeka Lobo, Louisianafeature One and Skyline Lover.

An earner of more than $260,000, Skyline Lover began his winning spree at Hialeah on December 11, 2010 when he won the Orange Blossom Stakes. He then went on to win the Crystal Rivers Stakes, Moonstone Stakes and Sailfish Stakes during last seasons Winter Meet. He started the 2011/2012 meet with a win in the Orange Blossom Stakes on December 10, 2011 before taking the Crystal Rivers Stakes on December 26.

The total mutuel handle for the 20th day of the 2011-2012 Quarter Horse season was $170,816 with a raucous crowd estimated at 4,000 witnessing the day’s proceedings.

Live racing resumes at Hialeah Park Friday January 27 with a nine-race program scheduled for a 2:25 PM ET start. South Florida’s historic racing emporium is now open five days a week, offering full-card simulcast wagering from the top thoroughbred tracks around the nation Wednesday through Sunday.
