From Claim-to-Fame Jess Phenomenal Wins Banyan Tree, Freaking, Logans Dash Score Back-To-Back Stakes

HIALEAH, FL—JANUARY 22, 2012—Trainer Ricardo Martinez, who entered the day with five wins from a limited number of 23 starters, was a perfect two-for-two Sunday, sending out longshot Jess Phenomenal to victory in The Banyan Tree and coming back two races later to score in The City Of Hialeah with Freaking.

After making just one start since 2009, Jess Phenomenal came off a fourth place claiming effort on December 30, 2011 to win the $22,500 Banyan Tree Stakes Sunday afternoon at Hialeah Park in South Florida. A 13-1 shot, he paid $28.00 to win.

The 7-year-old gelding, under jockey Francisco Ramirez, Jr., got up in the final jump to defeat Bold Badon by a nose. He completed the 250 yards in :13.137 seconds, a 101 speed index. Jessgonnafly finished a head back in third with Jazz And Corona completing the blanket finish another head back in fourth.

Racing for Alejandro Medina and trained by Ricardo Martinez, Jess Phenomenal had a flash of brilliance as a two-year-old when he finished third in the Rainbow Futurity Invitational at Ruidoso Downs in only his second career start.

The Feature Mr Jess gelding ended his 3-year-old season in the claiming ranks, where he labored through 2009. He did not race again until almost the last day of 2011, finishing fourth at Hialeah in a $10,000 Claiming event. Bred in Arizona by Celina Molina, Jess Phenomenal picked up $13,500 to push his career total $41,774 with a 4-2-2 record from 20 starts. He is out of the Casady Casanova mare Miss Mighty Casady.

Racing for Fransisco Ramos, Bold Badon pushed his bankroll to $185,843 after banking $4,500 for second. The 6-year-old winner of nine races in 30 starts is trained by Sacremento Chavez and ridden by Yordanis Amaro. Blaine Robinson bred the Dale Badon gelding in Idaho from the Merridoc mare Darbs Doll.

Jessgonnafly, a 4-year-old Fly Jess Fly gelding out of Toast To Gypsy by Toast To Dash, earned $2,250 for owner Isabell Guerrero. Ridden by Victor Olivo for trainer Victor Gonzalez, Jessgonnafly has earned nearly $55,000. Legacy Ranch bred the sorrel in North Dakota.

Completing the Banyan Tree field were Jazz And Corona, Ethics Aside, Just Wannabe Postoak, Jess Luci D, The Vig and Doctor Onaka.

Freaking Wins City of Hialeah Stakes

The royally bred Freaking held off Opportunity Zooms, for the second time this season, in the $22,500 City of Hialeah Stakes Sunday afternoon. It the second straight stakes victory at the South Florida racetrack for the brown gelding.

In a blanket finish, Freaking (#2) prevails over Opportunity Zooms (#3), Jesse In Town (#5) and Fast N Furrious (#4) to win the City of Hialeah Stakes.

Racing for owner/trainer Ricardo Martinez, the Tr Dasher 6-year-old defeated Opportunity Zooms by a head to earn $13,500. Jesse In Town finished a neck back in third.

Ridden by Hialeah 's leading rider Alex Baldillez, Jr., Freaking completed the 400 yards in :19.565 seconds. He pushed his record to 4-5-1 in 19 starts and earnings to $58,856. Edward Allred bred Freaking in California from the Chicks Beduino mare Chickasis.

Owned and trained by Jorge Luis Mendoza, Opportunity Zooms also finished second to Freaking in the Signature Stakes at Hialeah on December 26th. Ridden by Randy Edison, the Shazoom gelding, out of Strawfly Six by Strawfly Special, added $4,500 to his bankroll. Deon & Company bred the brown gelding, which has now earned more than $141,000, in Oklahoma.

Jesse In Town, who kicked off the Hialeah Winter Meet with a win in the Bienvenido de Nuevo Stakes on December 10th, earned $2,250 for owner Mary Passmore. Ridden by Oscar Delgado, the Feature Mr Jess gelding is trained by Jackie Kirby. Charles and Sharon Gray bred Jesse In Town in Arkansas from the Takin On The Cash mare Whatsthatfillysname.

Completing the field were Fast N Furrious, Hawkinson Time, Streakin Rare, Kt Makin A Tax Move, Winners Cartel, Legendary Express and Tre Boss.

Logans Dash Finishes Big to Win Miami-Dade County Stakes

Anibal Hernandez' Logans Dash finished big to win her second stakes of the Hialeah Park Winter QH Meet on Sunday. The Toast To Dash 3-year-old broke on top and extended her lead to ¾'s over Okey Dokey Diamond in the $22,250 Miami-Dade County Stakes. True Action finished a neck back for third.

Under jockey Jeremy Garcia, Logans Dash won for the fourth time in 10 career starts, completing the 300 yards in :15.428 seconds. The $13,350 winner's purse pushed the Manuel Mata trainee's earnings mark to $60,624.

In her prior start, January 8th, the bay filly won the $22,650 Biscayne Stakes at Hialeah Park. Triple M Farms, LLC bred Logans Dash in Louisiana from the Game Patriot mare Logans Game.

Also coming off a stakes win in the Hialeah La Nina Invitational, Okey Dokey Diamond earned $4,450 while finishing second for owner Rito Fernandez Moreno. Saddled by Victor Gonzalez and ridden by Victor Olivo the sorrel miss has earned more than $25,500. Joe Kirk Fulton bred the Okey Dokey Dale filly in Texas from the Streakin La Jolla mare Diamond Of Deception.

The lightly raced Pyc Paint Your Wagon filly True Action races for Raudel Mora and is trained by Guillermo Valdivia. Ridden by Alex Baldillez, Jr., True Action earned $2,225 to push her earnings to nearly $21,000. Dutch Masters III bred the filly in Missouri from the Rare Form mare Queen Then And Now. A winner of two of six starts, she came into the race off a two-length Allowance win on January 7th.

Completing the Miami-Dade field were Drinkin The Gold, Chimuela Chic, Deer Oh Deer, Dash On Girl and Azoom Pearl.

The total mutuel handle for the 20th day of the 2011-2012 Quarter Horse season was $170,816 with a raucous crowd estimated at 4,000 witnessing the day’s proceedings.

Live racing resumes at Hialeah Park Friday January 27 with a nine-race program scheduled for a 2:25 PM ET start. South Florida’s historic racing emporium is now open five days a week, offering full-card simulcast wagering from the top thoroughbred tracks around the nation Wednesday through Sunday.
