Lightly Raced First Blazin Love Wins 40th Edition of Sunland Park's Rich Shue Fly Stakes

SUNLAND PARK, NM—JANUARY 7, 2012—First Blazin Love scored his fourth win in five starts after a rapid fire victory in the 40th running of the $286,364 Shue Fly at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday.

Ridden by last year's leading Quarter Horse jockey G.R. Carter, First Blazin Love came away from the gates like a jet. The chestnut colt by Chicks A Blazin took the lead and increased the pressure on his rivals throughout the 400 yard dash for New Mexico bred foals of 2009. First Blazin Love edged clear in the final yards to win by a half length in a time of :19.155 seconds.

Trained by the nation’s leading Quarter Horse conditioner Paul Jones, First Blazin Love beat a talented field including Call Me A Blazn Chic and Pk Bay. He earned $134,591 for owners D. Johnson, Lisa Saumell and Johnny C. Martinez. Saumell is also Jones' assistant trainer. A $2 win ticket on First Blazin Love was worth $20.00. He earned a 92 speed index from his first career stakes win.

The new 3-year-old kicked off his career last season with a win in the Mountain Top Futurity trials in Ruidoso last June, posting the 13th fastest time. He returned on July 15th to win again and set the second fastest time to the restricted grade 1 $384,030 Zia Futurity, however he was scratched and did not compete in the final. First Blazin Love suffered his only loss in Allowance race on November 20 at Zia Park when he hopped at the start.

First Blazin Love returned to the winner's circle December 16 with a 1¼ length Shue Fly trial victory, qualifying with the ninth fastest time of :19.764. He has earned $156,472.

First Blazin Love, out of the First Down Dash mare Love At First Glance, was purchased for $15,000 from the Double LL Farm consignment at the August 2010 New Mexico Bred QH Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Mike Abraham is the breeder.

Fury of the Storm, a 21-1 long shot, was all out to finish second. The runner-up trained by Roberto Sanchez finished a nose in front of Pk Bay. Fury of the Storm made steady progress but could not threaten the winner. The Furyofthewind colt out of Bubbles Bunny by Sail On Bunny, earned $51,546 for the SM Cattle Export Company and Jaime Dominguez. He completed a lucrative $1 exacta worth $137.50. Bill and Sandy Miller are the breeders.

Pk Bay finished a very game third after a troubled start. The Brookstone Bay gelding regained his balanced and produced another stellar effort. Under jockey Alejandro Medellin, PK Bay surged in the final 50 yards and just missed second. The Fred Danley trainee was a close second in last spring’s New Mexico Spring Futurity behind Osbaldo. He raced at 9-2 odds on Saturday and earned $31,500. He completed an explosive $1 trifecta worth $2,120.70.

PK Bay races for David Barrett and J & SM, Inc. and has earned $183,127 from 12 career starts. The Dirk Jones bred colt is out of Pk Rainbow, by Rabbits Rainbow. He

The top qualifier Call Me A Blazn Chic experienced a slow start and broke in sixth position. The stakes winning filly launched a serious bid along the rail but did not have enough in the final stages. The 6-5 favorite under jockey Vicente Grajeda settled for a close fourth place finish. Roberto Sanchez also trains the New Mexico Classic Cup Futurity winner.

Chick Town, Wind Knocker, My Soul Mate, My Big Chief and Takin Back completed the field. Sammy James was scratched.
