ALBUQUERQUE, NM–JUNE 4, 2026–The spotlight will shine brightly on Albuquerque Downs Sunday afternoon as the first jewel of Quarter Horse racing’s prestigious Triple Crown takes center stage. A talented group of two-year-olds will headline the ten-race program, culminating in the $1,000,000 Grade 1 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Futurity, in which the ten fastest qualifiers from the May 23 trial heats return to compete for one of the sport’s most coveted juvenile titles.
Before the championship event, the second ten fastest qualifiers will have their opportunity to shine in the $100,000 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Juvenile Stakes, setting the stage for an unforgettable afternoon of racing.
The ninth race is scheduled for approximately 4:50 p.m., when the elite group of juveniles will load into the gate for the Grade 1 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Futurity, the opening leg of the Triple Crown series, to travel 350 yards.
Highly Lethal V enters the final as the 5-2 morning-line favorite after a dominant trial performance. The Oklahoma-bred gelding drew clear by 1¼ lengths to post the fastest qualifying time of the day. His trial victory marked a dramatic improvement over his debut at Los Alamitos in March, when he broke slowly and encountered trouble throughout. After shipping to Albuquerque Downs, the gelding posted a strong gate work leading into the trials, and the preparation paid immediate dividends.
Representing the colors of his breeder and owner, Valeriano Racing Stables, LLC, Highly Lethal V is a gelded son of Apollitical Jess out of the Tres Seis mare Lethal Class. The Raymond G. Valerio-trained colt will break from post three with Francisco Calderon aboard in pursuit of Ruidoso Futurity glory.
Looking to upset the favorite is Dulce Dreams, listed at 7-2 on the morning line and representing the powerful stable of James J. Gonzales III, who recently won the Heritage Place Futurity. The filly has done little wrong in her young career, winning both of her starts. She broke her maiden at Remington Park by two lengths, then shipped west to Albuquerque, where she showed determination in her trial victory, holding on by a neck to secure the sixth-fastest qualifying time.
The New Mexico-bred daughter of Dulce Sin Tacha is out of the Legendary Dreamer mare Frosty Dreams and was bred by Mark and Peggy Brown. Racing for AZ Field Service, which purchased her for $52,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Dulce Dreams will once again have regular rider Christian Cardenas in the irons as she breaks from post nine.
The undercard feature, the $100,000 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Juvenile Stakes, is scheduled as race eight at approximately 4:25 p.m. It offers the second-fastest group of qualifiers a chance to earn a significant stakes victory.
Leading that field is the 5-2 morning-line favorite, Indefensible. The colt made an immediate impression in his career debut during the trials, battling throughout and finishing strongest to win by a half-length. Prior to his debut, Indefensible drew attention with a series of impressive workouts at Sunland Park, signaling he was ready to compete at a high level.
Indefensible, owned by Gastroprotect Racing, LLC, was purchased for $99,000 at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale. He is by Favorite Cartel and out of the Wave Carver mare Indeed A Delight. Bred in California by Steve D. Burns, DVM, the colt is conditioned by Omar Vargas and will break from post five, with Sergio Becerra Jr. returning to the saddle.
With a million-dollar prize on the line and the first step toward Triple Crown glory awaiting the winner, Sunday’s Ruidoso Futurity program promises to showcase the sport’s brightest young stars in Quarter Horse racing. From proven trial standouts to emerging contenders poised for a breakthrough, the afternoon offers fans and bettors an exciting glimpse into the sport’s future as the road to championship honors begins in earnest at Albuquerque Downs.
The races at Albuquerque Downs can be watched on Q-Racing Video.
