EVANSTON, WY–JUNE 3, 2026–The road to the 307 HR Open Quarter Horse Derby reaches a critical turning point Saturday afternoon at Wyoming Downs, where forty-five talented sophomores square off in five competitive trial heats. With only ten spots available in the June 21 finale of the $75,000-added 307 HR Open Quarter Horse Derby, every stride will matter as the three-year-olds battle for a coveted qualifying berth.
Races two through six will showcase the trial action, with contenders sprinting 350 yards in hopes of posting one of the ten fastest times of the afternoon. The trials have drawn proven stakes performers, rising stars, and talented runners seeking to take the next step in their careers, creating what promises to be one of the most exciting cards of the Wyoming Downs season.
The spotlight shines brightest in the sixth and final trial, when Cyber Courage breaks from post two. The talented gelding enters the trials in top form after scoring a determined half-length victory in an allowance race, his second career win in five starts. Earlier this season, he showed his quality with a runner-up effort in the $38,000 Desert Classic Derby, finishing just half a length short of victory.
Owned and trained by Alex J. Torres-Casas, Cyber Courage has already earned $140,916 and has rewarded the connections who purchased him for $45,000 at the Heritage Place Sale. The Oklahoma-bred son of Cyber Monday out of the Captain Courage mare Tinys Courage was bred by Flag Ranch, LLC and will be partnered for the first time by jockey Brandon M. Guevara as he seeks a place in the Derby final.
The opening race in the second event includes Cowboy Cadilac, a horse whose achievements at Wyoming Downs make him a strong contender, despite two unusual efforts to begin his three-year-old season. The colt was among the top juveniles last season, winning the $250,000 Sweetwater Downs Futurity and earning $110,414.
Owned by Bill Doenz, the Oklahoma-bred son of Flying Cowboy 123 out of the Hes Relentless mare Ec Brandi returns to a surface where he previously excelled. Trainer Josh Taylor will send him from post six, with David Alvarez, Jr., aboard, as they look to recapture the form that made him one of the region's top two-year-olds.
With proven stakes winners, accomplished Derby contenders, and emerging sophomores all chasing the same goal, Saturday's trials promise plenty of drama from start to finish. As the clock becomes the ultimate judge, Wyoming Downs fans and bettors can expect a thrilling afternoon of high-speed action as forty-five talented three-year-olds race to earn their place in the 307 HR Open Quarter Horse Derby final.
