ROCK SPRINGS, WY—AUGUST 19, 2025—Sweetwater Downs will showcase a talented group of two-year-olds on Saturday afternoon when 11 trials are contested to determine the ten fastest qualifiers for the $200,000-est. Sweetwater Downs Futurity final is scheduled for September 6.
Each trial is set at 350 yards, and the program has drawn some of the region’s most promising juveniles.
Race 6 looks to be the strongest race on Saturday with $235,750 Wyoming Futurity winner #5 Deja Dulce (8-5)—owned by Daisy Carlson and Joe Goggins, trained by Jess R. Matt, ridden by Jacob Cardenas, heading the field.
Oklahoma-bred gelding by leading first-crop sire Dulce Sin Tacha out of La Deja Blue by Carters Cartel just won the $235,750 Wyoming Futurity on August 10 after taking his July 25 trial. She has won three of six starts and earned $126,885.
Next is #2 Eye B Popping (2-1) for Heavy Hitters Racing Stables, trainer Joe M. Davis, and Julian Zavala, second in the Wyoming Downs Futurity, she's looking for a rematch with Deja Dulce.
The Texas-bred filly is by Brimmerton out of Eye Popping by Mr Eye Opener and was also a sharp trial winner at Energy Downs earlier this summer and has banked $60,221.
In the opening heat (Race 1), morning-line favorite #4 KR Cartels Calamity (8-5) represents owner Luis A. Gonzales for trainer Luis H. Gonzalez with Brayan Juarez up. The Colorado-bred colt is by Five Bar Cartel out of KR Calamity by Foose and sold for $12,000 at Heritage Place Yearling Sale. He won the Beehive Futurity in April and was fourth in the Bitterroot Futurity in July.
He meets #7 Fly The Flag (4-1) for owner/trainer Stan Young with Jacob Cardenas. The Wyoming-bred gelding is by Fly Thru The Fire out of Eagle Nation by Stoli and comes off a sharp trial run earlier this year where he qualified for the $226,000 Wyoming Bred Futurity. Note he removes blinkers for this race.
Race 2 features #6 Bobs Speedysaintjess (5-2) for owner Michael K. McKell, trainer Sergio Canales, and jockey Jesus J. Canales. The Idaho-bred gelding by Jess Got Easier out of SP Saint Patty by Saint Shackleton exits a third in the $235,750 Wyoming Futurity after a game runner-up in his July 25 trial.
In Race 4, #1 Hez Gifted (8-5)—owned by Michael K. McKell, trained by Sergio Canales, ridden by Jesus J. Canales—is a Utah-bred gelding by Genetically Gifted out of Girl Like by Kiddy Up. He’s been a steady check-getter and comes off a strong string of efforts at this distance. He was fourth in the $97,000 Beehive Futurity.
The deep Race 5 includes four to watch, led on the line by #7 OJD Steaming Train (2-1) for owners Karla & Oscar Diaz, trainer Javier Fuentes, and rider David Alvarez Jr. The Idaho-bred colt is by Freighttrain B out of OJD One Favorite JJ by Favorite Cartel was third in the $91,000 Bitterroot Futurity in his last start.
Close behind is #5 Freedum (5-2) for owner Gabriel Carballo, trainer Sergio Canales, and jockey Jesus J. Canales; the Utah-bred by champion Kvn Corona out of Aquafina by First Down Dash just finished Sixty in the Wyoming Futurity.
Then #4 Sharp Dressed Man 36 (7-2)—owned by Wagonhammer Ranch, trained by Skyler Greene, with Victor F. Dominguez—is a Colorado-bred by Tres Seis out of Winning Merlot by Winners Version, who captured his July 25 trial to qualify for the Wyoming Futurity.
Rounding out the group is #1 CA Mental Cartel (9-2) for owner Lana Matt, trainer Jess R. Matt, and Jacob Cardenas. The Florida-bred filly by Mental Error out of Lil Baby Eagle by One Famous Eagle in undefeated in two starts that include the $35,000 Charlie Russel Futurity.
Race 7 highlights #4 Fooseylady (5-2) for owner Robert Ortiz. The Utah-bred filly is by Foose out of Coronado Kiss by Coronado Cartel and owns a stakes win in the $67,000 Haley Giles Futurity at Weber in May. Minor Arana will be riding.
She’ll be challenged by #3 Jessa Royal Tee (7-2)—owned by Joe. M. David and R and R Racing LLC, trained by Davis, ridden by Julian Zavla—a Louisiana-bred by leading sire Apollitical Jess from the Freighttrain B mare Sheza Freighttrain T broke his maiden in a trial victory his last start.
Race 8’s focus is #4 Billys Brandi (7-5) for owners Bill Doenz, trainer Josh Taylor, and rider Juan Pulido. The Oklahoma-bred filly is by first-crop sire Cyber Monday was fourth in the $100,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Juvenile and a finalist in the $246,000 Energy Downs 307 Futurity. Juan Pulido will ride the colt out of Ec Brandi by Hes Relentless.
The penultimate Race 10 is deep. By the morning line, #1 Gachala (5-2)—owned by Ricardo P. Castillo Sr. & Rainee Browning, trained by Castillo, with Jose Espinoza riding—is a Texas-bred filly by Mental Error out of Flash Em The Jewels by First Moonflash. She’s a two-time Oneida winner and a last-out stakes winner; she sold for $14,700 at Heritage Place.
Next comes #5 Ambrosia B (3-1) for owner Steve Berry, trainer Sergio Canales, and rider Jesus J. Canales. The Berry-bred filly by Kvn Corona out of Bundle Doe by Hennessy (TB) has been competitive in stakes and trials, qualifying for the Beehive Juvenile and the Bitterroot Juvenile.
#7 Kit Karsyn (7-2)—owned by Juanita J. Villegas, trained by Jesse Villegas, ridden by Luis Peralta—is a Texas-bred gelding by leading first-crop sire Dulce Sin Tacha out of Ventura Highway by Apollitical Jess and a $6,500 Heritage Place purchase who was a finalist to the $245,000 Energy Downs 307 Racing Futurity and third in the $67.000 BHS Futurity.
Rounding out the quartet is #2 B Kissed (9-2) for owner-trainer Jay Pitcher, Kyle and Kelly Cook. Pitcher trains the Texas-bred filly by Kiss My Hocks out of Jess B Glory by Mr Jess Perry. She was a $23,000 Heritage Place buy.
The finale, Race 11, showcases #3 Fire In The Whole (8-5) for owner Michael K. McKell, trainer Sergio Canales, and Jesus J. Canales. The Utah-bred gelding is by champion Kvn Corona out of champion Separate Fire by Walk Thru Fire won the $91,000 Bitterroot Futurity in his last start. Bred from the McColee Land & Livestock program, he brings top-notch figures.
The ten fastest qualifiers from all trials combined will advance to the Futurity final on September 6. Post time for Saturday’s opening trial is 1:00 p.m. (MDT).
