ALTOONA, IA–JULY 29, 2025–Saturday’s opener at Prairie Meadows will spotlight the $40,000 Cy-Hawk Stakes, a 350-yard dash for Iowa-bred Quarter Horses aged three and older.
Scheduled as Race 1 on the card with a 6:00 p.m. approximate post time, the event promises a showdown of proven stakes performers, up-and-coming sprinters, and consistent veterans.
Headlining the field is Ab Boogie (9-5), the morning-line favorite and a multiple stakes winner bred by Ruben Mojica. The 4-year-old gelding by Apollitical Blood out of Boogie Wagon by Lil Kool Wagon enters the Cy-Hawk Stakes off a hard-fought runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Keokuk Stakes on July 6.
Ab Boogie boasts career earnings of $190,188 and a record of 5 wins and 5 seconds from 14 starts. Trained by Manuel Mojica Campos for Boogies Legacy Racing Stables LLC, he will be piloted by Alfredo Triana Jr. A stakes winner at Prairie Meadows last fall in the Polk County Derby, Ab Boogie has shown elite speed with a top speed index of 103.
Close behind in the morning line is Cowboy 123 (7-2), trained by Alex Wessels for owner Stephen Moyle. The 4-year-old sorrel gelding by Flying Cowboy 123 and out of Corona Carmelita by Corona Cartel was bred by Paragon Farms LLC.
Cowboy 123 was second to Ab Boogie in last year's Polk County Derby and returned this season with an allowance win in June before finishing ninth in the Keokuk Stakes. Jockey Angel Ramirez will be aboard the five-time winner who has earned $110,766 from 11 starts, including three stakes-placed efforts.
Another strong contender is Ajs Favorite Ia (4-1), a 3-year-old gelding by Favorite Cartel out of Df Aj Green Leaves by Apollitical Jess, bred in Iowa by Darling Farms.
Ajs Favorite Ia enters on a two-race win streak, capturing the Cyclone Derby on July 12 and an allowance on June 20. Also trained by Alex Wessels and owned by Stephen Moyle, the rapidly improving sophomore has 3 wins and 2 seconds from 6 starts and will break from the rail under jockey Cristian Esqueda.
All three featured runners have demonstrated strong local form over the Prairie Meadows surface. With a competitive field assembled, and experienced connections behind the top entries, the Cy-Hawk Stakes promises a thrilling kickoff to Saturday’s card for fans and horsemen alike.
Post time for the first race is set for 6:00 p.m. Central at Prairie Meadows.
