VINTON, LA–JULY 3, 2025–Delta Downs will light up the Louisiana sky this Independence Day with the $263,305 Grade 2 Firecracker Futurity, a premier summer showcase for two-year-old Quarter Horses.
The futurity final, set for Friday evening, July 4, will be run over 400 yards and anchors a strong card with first post at approximately 6:15 p.m. CDT.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from the June 13 trials return to contest the lucrative final, each carrying 124 pounds in Race 8. Estimated post is 9:17 p.m.
Leading the field is Davsam, the 5-2 morning line favorite, who returns for owner Chance Kiehne and trainer Viviane Hill. Bred in Oklahoma by Paul Tonderum, the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess out of Little Kool Corona by Corona Cartel was a $45,000 Heritage Place purchase and has shown promise in just three career starts.
Davsam comes off a powerful trial win at Delta Downs over 350 yards where he drew off by a length in 17.710, posting the fastest trial time. Ridden by Juan F. Garcia Jr., Davsam has never been off the board, with a win, a second, and a third from three starts, and boasts earnings of over $23,400.
He was also a strong third in the $194,000 Old South Futurity final in May, demonstrating late rallying ability despite trouble at the break.
Another top contender is Swing Time, who breaks from the #3 post at 7-2 on the morning line for owner Jorge Haddad and trainer Jose R. Espinosa.
Bred in Texas by Julianna Hawn Holt, the talented filly is by leading sire Favorite Cartel out of the champion mare Flash And Roll, by First Moonflash.
She turned heads in her Firecracker trial, finishing strongly to win by more than a length under jockey Oscar Andrade Jr. She covered the 350 yards on a wet track in 18.014, posting the fifth fastest time despite the track conditions.
Swing Time has won two of her three starts, including a maiden win at Sam Houston in May where she drew away late at 250 yards. Her connections will be hoping the extra 50 yards in the futurity final plays to her advantage, especially with her deep female family and proven finishing kick.
With fireworks in the sky and on the track, Friday night’s Firecracker Futurity promises to deliver plenty of sparks at the classic Delta Downs distance. Fans can watch these promising juveniles try to stamp themselves as stars of the summer season.
