SAN ANTONIO, TX – JULY 1, 2025–The Thursday evening feature at Retama Park shines a spotlight on elite female speedsters in the $40,000-added Selma Stakes, a fast-paced 350-yard dash drawing a deep field of ten fillies and mares aged three and up. With class, speed, and rivalry all in the mix, the Selma Stakes is shaping up as one of the most competitive races of the summer meet.

Headlining the stakes action is Shez Flyn, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, who brings momentum and pedigree into the starting gate. The three-year-old daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 out of Shez Exposed (by FDD Dynasty) has come into her own during her sophomore campaign, collecting three wins this year and boosting her earnings to $52,694.

Bred in Texas by Paragon Farm, LLC and racing for Melchor Mendez, Shez Flyn is trained by Daniel G. Luna and will break from post position two with regular rider Oliver E. Martinez back in the irons. She’ll look to make the most of a favorable draw and continue her upward trend against older rivals.

Just to her inside looms a serious threat in Ladys Gotta Jet (4-1), a four-year-old mare who has kicked off her 2025 campaign in dominant fashion. The daughter of Ec Jet One out of Lady Lilia by First Down Dash is unbeaten this year, with a key victory in the Miss Sam Houston Stakes under her belt. A proven stakes competitor with $147,336 in career earnings, she’s bred and owned by Pete A. Scarmardo and trained by John A. Stinebaugh.

Rider Gilberto Linares will be aboard as Ladys Gotta Jet looks to stay perfect on the year and add another trophy to her résumé.

The Selma Stakes field is loaded with multiple stakes winners and in-form runners, ensuring no easy path to the winner’s circle. Notables include:

  • #3 Jess Louisiana Girl (5-1) – A consistent competitor with finishing kick and class
  • #4 Rustys Cowgirl (10-1) – Longshot with a strong late pace profile
  • #5 First Time for Wine (8-1) – Improving form and well-bred
  • #6 As Moonflash (6-1) – Lightly raced and dangerous
  • #7 You Look Famous (12-1) – Can surprise on her best day
  • #8 Trixiee (15-1) – Faces steep class test but shows promise
  • #9 Zsuzannah (20-1) – Big price, but capable of a strong break
  • #10 Jeg Fascination (12-1) – Outside draw may suit her late run

With seasoned mares and up-and-coming fillies all converging on the 350-yard distance, the Selma Stakes promises to deliver a thrilling finish as these elite sprinters race for stakes glory and a share of the lucrative purse. Post time for the Selma Stakes is scheduled for approximately 8:55 PM, under the lights at Retama Park.
