ALBUQUERQUE, NM–OCTOBER 12, 2025–Eddy Cartel kept his perfect record intact on Sunday after pulling off a slight upset victory in the $1,158,003 New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Futurity-RG2 at The Downs at Albuquerque.
The Paul Blanchard–owned gelding earned $579,002 for his winning effort, stopping the clock in 19.641 seconds for 400 yards into a seven-mph headwind and posting an 88 speed index.
Under Joseph Belloc, Jr., the James J. Gonzales III trainee broke well from post nine, battled evenly through the stretch, drifted slightly late, and surged at the wire for his biggest career score, paying $16.40 to win at 7-1 odds.
The son of Big Daddy Cartel was bred in New Mexico by Eduardo Mendoza from the Bodacious Dash mare Em Bodacious Chick. The victory pushes his record to four wins from four starts with total earnings of $639,559.
Mw Bcause Im First finished a neck behind in second under Francisco Calderon, also for trainer James J. Gonzales III. The sorrel filly by B Cause Im A Hero is out of Blazen Alena by Favorite Cartel. She is bred and owned by Larry Marcum and Nancy Wells.
From five starts, Mw Bcause Im First has compiled a record of four wins and one second with total earnings of $291,093.
Major longshot Hez Rio Trouble completed the trifecta another neck back under Emilio Tapia for trainer Wes Giles and owners Robert Driggers and Ben Ivey. The sorrel gelding by Jet Black Patriot is out of Riverside Babe by First Moonflash and was bred in New Mexico by Ivey Cattle Co.
Hez Rio Trouble has finished in the money in every start, compiling a record of one win and four thirds from five outs with total earnings of $151,760. Earlier this season, he ran third in the Mountain Top New Mexico Bred Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs.
The remaining order of finish was Cq Coyame Jessy, Luxurie, Sure Hit, Chamacuz, Czar Catrina, Holliday, and Pour Me A Drinkk, the post-time favorite who finished last after nearly losing his rider at the break.
