GRANTS PASS, OR—SEPTEMBER 21, 2025—Four trials were contested Sunday at Grants Pass Downs to determine the 10 qualifiers for the $80,000-est. Far West Futurity final, which will be run on Sunday, October 12 at 400 yards.
A colt by Five Bar Cartel, Kr Cartels Calamity, led the way with the fastest qualifying time of 19.798 seconds, a 96 speed index.
Bred in Colorado by Kidd Ranch, Kr Cartels Calamity is out of the Foose mare Kr Calamity and races for owner Luis A. Gonzales.
Trained by Jose A. Rosales Gomez and ridden by Cesar T. Moreno, the brown colt was a $12,000 yearling purchase at last year's Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. He closed strongly to win his trial by three-quarters of a length, setting the top mark of the day.
Kr Cartels Calamity, who has three wins in six starts this year, won the Beehive Futurity in April and was fourth in the Bitterroot Futurity(RG3) in July. He has earned $52,512.
The second-fastest qualifier was Ccr Your Favorite, a gelded son of leading sire Favorite Cartel out of Wrap You Up by Walk Thru Fire. Racing for breeder-owners Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing of Oregon, Ccr Your Favorite was second in the fastest trial and stopped the timer in 19.886 seconds, a 96 speed index.
Trained by Hector Magallanes and piloted by Mark A. Jasso, he is winless in five starts this year. He was fifth in the Firecracker Futurity Consolation last July.
The top three qualifiers came in the closing trial.
The $80,000-est. Far West Futurity final will bring together the 10 fastest qualifiers on Sunday, October 12, at Grants Pass Downs.
