ROCK SPRINGS, WY—SEPTEMBER 14, 2025—Four trials for Accredited Wyoming Bred 3-year-olds were contested Sunday afternoon at Sweetwater Downs to determine the ten fastest qualifiers for the $118,350 WABRA Wyoming Bred Quarter Horse Derby.
The 350-yard final is set for Saturday, September 27.
Papas Tribe, a 3-year-old sorrel gelding by multiple stakes sire Pappasito out of Tribal Fire, by FDD Dynasty, posted the fastest qualifying time of 17.335 seconds, a 99 speed index into a 5 mph crosswind, in the tenth race of the afternoon.
Owned by Eddie Jensen and bred by Ron and Laurie Moosman of Wyoming, Papas Tribe is trained by Jess R. Matt and was ridden by jockey Jacob Cardenas.
The stakes-placed gelding, who defeated Sj Illusive N Shady by a neck, will return to the final as the top contender off his strong trial score. The three-time winner has banked $35,443 in 14 career starts. He was second in the Kc Carden Accredited Wyoming Bred Derby in July.
The second fastest qualifier, Y O At A Glance, turned in a 17.348 clocking, a 98 speed index, while winning the 12th race.
The gray gelding is by Fiftyshadezofgrey and out of Barely A Secret, by Brindis Por Cayenne. Bred and owned by Gerald F. Kaul of Wyoming, Y O At A Glance is trained by Jess R. Matt and also ridden by Jacob Cardenas, giving Matt and Cardenas two of the top three fastest qualifiers.
Third fastest qualifier honors went to Sj Illusive N Shady, who covered the 350 yards in 17.366, a 98 speed index.
The gelding is also by Fiftyshadezofgrey, out of Secretly Illusive, by Beduino Secret. Stephanie and Jim Ferguson own him. Gerald F. Kaul bred him in Wyoming, and Jose F. Rivas Guzman trained him. Jesus Virgen had the riding call.
Winner of the Wyoming Bred Futurity at 2, Sj Illusive N Shady has won four of 13 starts and earned $69,003.
Trainer Kylie Valenzuela saddled five qualifiers, including 4th fastest Outlaw Jess, 5th fastest Bv Camila, 8th fastest A Shot Of Luck, 9th fastest Chase His Creek and 10th fastest Mr Volaris.
The complete field of ten qualifiers will return for the $118,350 WABRA Wyoming Bred QH Derby final on Saturday, September 27 at Sweetwater Downs.
