GILLETTE, WY–MAY 30, 2026–Cartel Can Fly surged late to capture the $17,800 United Tote Hook Overnight Stakes Friday afternoon at Energy Downs, defeating a mixed field of Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds in the 870-yard feature. The race was contested over a fast track under clear skies with a 12 mph headwind.
Ridden by Dakota Wood, Cartel Can Fly stopped the clock in :46.179 while earning a 93 speed index. The bay gelding is a homebred owned and bred by David L. Wisdom and trained by Robert Johnson.
The 5-year-old son of Favorite Cartel out of the Foose mare Babe Can Fly, a full sister to Grade 1 winner Rock You ($790,325) and stakes winner Ali Babe Foose ($484,614), rallied from just off the pace and finished strongest through the lane.
The victory improved his record to 12 starts with four wins, one second and three thirds while boosting his earnings to $39,221. He previously finished third in the Grade 3 Covered Bridges Stakes and was a finalist in the Campbell County Hook Overnight Stakes.
India Ink, under Larren Delorme, finished second after setting the pace before being outfinished late. The homebred gelding is owned and trained by Mark Hibdon and was bred by V. Gail Ray.
Sired by Midnight Storm and out of the Sky Mesa mare Summer Of Joy, the Thoroughbred veteran now sports a record of 38-9-7-2 with earnings of $153,702. He entered the race off a fourth-place effort in the Jack Greer Memorial Stakes and was the winner of last year's Grasmick Stakes.
TC Rambling Moon rallied along the rail to secure third under Cerapio Figueroa. Owned by Tryston Matt and trained by Jess Matt, the gelding is by Jess My Moon out of the The Downs Side mare Rambling Maggie. His career record now stands at 10-2-1-2 with earnings of $14,497.
Y O Unstopple KC finished fourth after showing early speed, followed by Hot Jammies and Straight Luck. Retained was scratched from the race.
