GRANTS PASS, OR—OCTOBER 12, 2025—Handsome proved true to his name and talent on Sunday evening at Grants Pass Downs, turning back a strong late charge from You Tuber to win the $85,000 Far West Futurity Final for 2-year-olds at 400 yards.
The sorrel colt stopped the clock in 20.189 seconds, earning a speed index of 86 over a "good" track with no wind recorded.
Handsome, a son of leading sire Favorite Cartel out of Comely by Tr Dasher, was bred in California by Edward C. Allred and sold for $58,000 at the 2024 Los Alamitos Equine Mixed Sale.
Racing for Rancho AA LLC, the promising colt was handled by trainer Adrian Gonzalez and ridden to victory by Oscar Peinado. Battling gamely throughout, Handsome prevailed by a head at the wire, securing the winner’s share of $34,000.
Bouncing off a fourth-place effort in the September 21 trials, Handsome broke his maiden in the Far West Futurity final. Before that, he had finished second in his maiden debut at Los Alamitos last March and a couple of off-the-board trial performances at the Orange County racetrack. He has earned $36,742.
Runner-up You Tuber, a gelded son of champion One Famous Eagle out of Checkn Fire by Walk Thru Fire, came charging late to just miss in a determined effort. Bred in California by Steve D. Burns, DVM, You Tuber races for Donald Conway and is trained by Hector Magallanes, with Jose Figueroa in the irons.
The $20,000 purchase from the 2024 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale collected $14,450 for second place. Third in the Firecracker Futurity consolation last summer, You Tuber has banked $19,360.
Finishing third was Beehive Futuirty winner Kr Cartels Calamity, who overcame a slow start and early trouble to close strongly in the final yards. The brown colt is by multiple stakes sire Five Bar Cartel and out of Kr Calamity by Foose, bred in Colorado by Kidd Ranch.
Racing for Luis Gonzales, the colt is trained by Jose Rosales Gomez and was ridden by Cesar Moreno. The $12,000 purchase from the 2024 Heritage Place Yearling Sale earned $9,350 for his late-running performance. Also fourth in the Bitterroot Futurity(RG3) last summer, he has earned $63,862.
There were no pari-mutuel payoffs due to a malfunction with the tote system.
The remaining order of finish was Ccr Sweetnseperate, Ccr Your Favorite, Mommas Cartel, Cinderella Jg, Gangster On Da Run, Little Tony T, and Three Bars Blazin.
