VINTON, LA—JUNE 12, 2025—In a dramatic conclusion to the final of three trials Thursday night at Delta Downs, Famous Flyin Cowgirl and San Lorenzo Trump finished in a dead heat to top the qualifiers for the upcoming $130,100 Firecracker Derby (G3).

The 3-year-old runners each covered the 350-yard distance in 17.606 seconds over a sealed muddy track, recording a 95 speed index and securing the fastest qualifying time for the July 4 final.

Famous Flyin Cowgirl, a Louisiana-bred filly by Flying Cowboy 123, surged late from mid-pack under jockey Ricardo Hernandez Jr. to catch her rival at the wire. She is out of Famous Numbers Fly, a daughter of One Famous Eagle, and was bred by Grant Farms LLC.

Trained by Jose Carrizales for owner Raul A. Beltran Moreno, the filly was a $45,000 purchase from the 2023 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. A finalist in the Southwest Juvenile Invitational(G2), Gillespie County Fair Futurity and the Four Corners Futurity she has earned $54,325.

Breaking sharply from post position four, San Lorenzo Trump showed his usual early speed and was all out to hold his ground as the pair hit the wire together.

The Oklahoma-bred colt by leading sire Apollitical Jess is out of Legacys A Streakin by Streakin La Jolla, and was bred by Donald J. Friesen. He races for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. and is trained by Jeremy Derozin. The sorrel colt was a $110,000 purchase at the 2023 Heritage Place Yearling Sale and was ridden to victory by Leonardo Rodriguez.

He entered the trials off a win in the $110,800 Old South Derby in his last start May 16 at Delta Downs.  He has banked $97,284 after four wins in 11 starts.

The night’s opening trial was won by Seis Chilitos, who rallied late under Nestor Duran to score in 17.658 seconds, earning a 94 speed index. The Texas-bred filly by Chilitos, out of Seis Passes by Tres Seis, is owned by Jaime Cardenas, trained by Miguel A. Castillo, and was bred by Richard Arizpe.

Runner-up in that heat was Flyin Chilitos, who clocked 17.683 for the fourth-fastest time. The gelded son of Chilitos, out of Sensational Senator by Louisiana Senator, is trained by Leonel Hernandez for owner Omar Paredes and was bred in Texas by Claudia Miranda.

In the second trial of the night, Jj Jessa Dynasty posted a wire-to-wire win in 17.702 seconds with a 92 speed index. The gray filly by Jj Jess An Meteorite, out of Jb Chic Dynasty by FDD Dynasty, was ridden by Rene Hernandez. She is trained by Jose Carrizales and races for owners Jorge Alan Bazaldua Jr. and Jose Carrizales. The filly was bred in Texas by J & J Stables LLC.

The top ten fastest qualifiers from Thursday’s trials will return to Delta Downs on Friday, July 4 for the Firecracker Derby final, contested at 400 yards.
