MILES CITY, MT—MAY 17, 2025—Second fastest qualifier Dm Nite Hawk drifted in under jockey David Jimenez on his way to a half-length win in the $42,800 Dan Lockie Quarter Horse Derby at Miles City Saturday afternoon.
Conditioned by Brenda Guzman, Dm Nite Hawk completed his 300 yard task in 15.490 seconds, equaling a 98 speed index. It was the first win in two starts this season for Dm Nite Hawk who was second to the fastest qualifier Feudalicious in the May 4 trials.
Co-owned by Guzman and Donaldo Hermosillo Dm Nite Hawk has won three of six career starts and today's $21,400 winner's purse boosted his earnings to $64,567.
Donna Mushinski bred the Hawkeye gelding in Texas from the Panther Mountain mare Mountain Affair. He was a finalist in both the Louisiana Downs Futurity(G2) and Old South Futurity at 2.
Co-owner Hermosillo purchased the gelding for $14,000 at the 2025 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in Oklahoma City.
Hotlipps Hulahan finished second under jockey Jacob Cardenas, but he was disqualified for interference and placed fifth.
Mariahs Interest, a filly by multiple stakes sire Seperete Interest, was moved to second after the disqualification. Robert Don Johnson trains the Oklahoma-bred for owner Valerie Shoun. Larry Morehead and Xcel Farms bred the bay filly from the Valiant Hero mare Bp Mariahs Heroine. She earned $9,844 for the effort.
Moving up to third, Jrs Queen picked up $5,564 for owner Broke Heart Ranch. Also trained by Johnson, Ron Moosman, and Jim Nebeker bred the Wyoming-bred daughter of the leading third-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123, from Mississippi Queen by Corona Cartel.. Winner of last year's BHS Futurity, she has earned $40,134.
Completing the official order of finish was Rsecret Valentine, Hotlipps Hulahann, Six Cb Sweet Haven, and One Sweet Fighter.
Dan Lockie Derby Consolation
Flippinfast, piloted by Richard Birdrattler won the $10,000 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity Consolation by 3/4-length in 15.601 seconds for a 94 speed index. Kayla Warren trains the son of Rite Favorite for owner/breeder Neale Edwards. He is out of Daddies Darlin by Big Daddy Cartel.
Kiss The Cowgirl, Dash Up Dynasty, Famous Speedy One and One Sweet Ferrari round out the order of finish.
Miles City will host a 10-race card on Sunday, headed by the $67,150 BHS Quarter Horse Futurity. The first post is at 12:30 pm (MDT). The BHS Futurity will run as Race 9, estimated post 5:02 pm.
