EDMONTON, ONT–JULY 18, 2025–A field of seven three-year-old Quarter Horses will contest Saturday’s $22,200(CAN) All Canadian Derby at Century Mile Racetrack, with a first post scheduled for 4:45 p.m. (MDT).
The 350-yard sprint features a strong group of qualifiers from the trials earlier this month, headlined by fastest qualifier and morning-line favorite Flash Me A Corona at 7-5 and the accomplished Sizzles Boss at 2-1.
Trained by Craig Robert Smith and owned by Janet Patriquin and Ralph E. Danard, Flash Me A Corona enters the final off an impressive 350-yard trial win in 17.766 seconds on July 5, posting a 97 speed index while driving clear under jockey Ricardo Moreno.
The Alberta-bred gelding by Obsessed With Corona, out of Look Back Moonflash by First Moonflash, was bred by co-owner Ralph Danard.
Flash Me A Corona has won four of five starts this year and five of 13 lifetime, banking over $53,000. Purchased for just $7,400 at the AQHRA Canada Sale, he’s developed into a top-level stakes performer with three wins at the Derby distance.
Second choice Sizzles Boss, a consistent son of multiple stakes sire JD Wagon Boss out of Northfork Sizzle by Sizzlin Red Corona, is owned by the Cinch Up Syndicate and trained by Buckey A. Stockwell.
O.A. Hernandez retains the mount after a runner-up effort to Flash Me A Corona in the trials, where he also earned a 97 speed index.
Sizzles Boss boasts career earnings of $61,861 from nine starts with four wins and three second-place finishes. A $11,500 purchase from the AQHRA Sale, he was victorious in the Alberta-Bred Futurity (G3) last fall and has finished second in two consecutive stakes efforts this season.
Among other contenders, Rjs Boss (4-1) qualified by winning the slower of the two trial heats and is a multiple stakes-placed gelding trained by Buckey A. Stockwell for owner Glenn K. Wills. A $30,000 AQHRA yearling by JD Wagon Boss out of Rj Bitterroot Babe (El Mistral), he was third in last year’s Alberta-Bred Futurity (G3) and shows a sharp win in the July 5 trial with a wire-to-wire effort under O.A. Hernandez.
Fabulous Persuasion (9-2), bred and owned by Barry and Janice Sather, is a lightly raced filly by One Fabulous Eagle out of Singles Cruise by Favorite Cartel. Trained by Misael Moreno and ridden by Jesus Ambrocio Medina, she was second to Rjs Boss in the trials and won a maiden race in June at 300 yards.
With a field of talented Alberta-bred three-year-olds, Saturday’s All Canadian Derby promises a showdown between the proven class of Sizzles Boss and the sharp recent form of Flash Me A Corona. The winner will add a stakes title to their résumé and a sizable share of the $22,200 (CAN) purse.
